Hi all, just got done making a cleaver in my backyard forge from a piece of 3 inch by 1/4 x 11 inch long 5160 hot rolled steel. Was not sure how hard the hot rolled was going to be but found out I was able to cut it with a hack saw and drill it no problem. Forged the bevel by hand and used a ball peen on the top half to give it the rough look.

Check out the center filler in the handle - the tang runs straight and is about 3/4 inch wide. This makes it much easier to cut with hack saw by hand and then sand in the contour by hand.

The scales are 1/4 inch white oak from Home Depot and the liners were black G-10 1/16 inch thick.
Turned out to be a really fun project.
