    Default Greetings from Los Angeles

    *tap tap* This thing on?

Hi yall, Im Jess (41/female) from Southern California. I run a small business consulting firm and an independent record label. Im a designer, front end web developer, and UX specialist. My college education focused on microbiology, horticulture, and botany.

Im an experienced camper, but Ive only really seriously roughed it when I was a kid on my yearly pack-out trips to the CO mountains with my parents. Ive never been in any true wilderness survival situation. My primary interest is in homesteading, but obviously a lot of this knowledge overlaps.

Ive overwhelmingly lived in very urban environments around the world, and my outdoor and day-to-day lives have always felt very separate. My immediate goal is to merge the two. My husband and I are saving for land, where we want to build off grid. Were downsizing dramatically at the moment, and Im looking to build a more formidable skill set until we get to our forever home.

I have extensive plant knowledge, from identification, foraging, gardening, cooking, to preservation. Im pretty good at building, and a have a lot of little skills that arent well developed - sewing, archery, carving, etc. My husband is a carpenter and artist. I value handmade, self-sufficient, old-ways, new tech, creative, elegance-in-simplicity, and high efficiency.

Welp, I feel like I just barfed my whole life out here in this intro. I think I covered all the pertinent points! I look forward to learning from yall and hope I have something to offer, as well. Happy new year!

    Howdy.

At 41 was when I decided that living on the grid beat the heck out of off it. We weren't really off the grid but we could see it from where we were. There's a lot to be said for running water and flush toilets, not to mention electricity on demand, cell phones, microwave popcorn, computers, TV, etc....

But, having the know how is certainly a good idea.

No doubt! Well probably have a combination of off-grid and city utilities, and well ease into full off-grid living. A lot of the places were looking at here require connection to city even if you dont use it.

Welcome. I suggest if you and your husband can swing it, you get out of California. For self reliant people who believe in their Constitutional Rights and freedom, California is not the place to be ... and it is going to get worse.

I lived in Los Angeles for 36 years and my wife was born there so I know what the State has become and what the suffocating restrictions are there.

    Just a suggestion.
