Thread: Went to work on an old ALICE pack

Default Went to work on an old ALICE pack

I wanted a pack that I could lash the tent and bags to and also use for some utility pouches, canteens, etc. I had a crappy Alice pack with a new frame and straps so I went to work. I got some heavy canvas from the fabric store and had the scraps of webbing around the house. I used a USGI sleeping mat to pad it in the proper places and whammo. This is what you get. This is a prototype. I am going to build a new one with 1000d Cordura and space the weebing properly next time.

    Thumbs up

Nice job! I wish that I had thought about that before spending about 250.00 on the molle pack and assorted pouches that I have... and still am trying to attach sleeping mat, sleeping bag and pack tent to it.

I had also considered using the waist belt off my Molle pack like that guy. The Molle pack is just too big for my needs as a weekend camper. The medium size ALICE is just about perfect. With the added real-estate the Molle waist strap provides that may just be the cats meow. If you notice he is using old LC1 shoulder straps. In my pic you'll see the upgrades done on the LC2 straps. I think they are the clear choice to use on an ALICE frame.

I can't ague with that. I thought you might also like the shelf to help support some of the gear you are adding to it like the tent and bags.

I will have to try out a shelf. I have never used one before. It would certainly help stabilize the load.
