    Default Bali Volcano ....

Watching the news tonite about the volcano erupting in Bali......

    https://www.express.co.uk/news/world...news-Indonesia

Now this has been going on for a while...and is getting serious...

But there seems to be a "Hey I paid for my vacation and want a refund if my hotel get buried in ash......"
"This a part of the tour?....

    Don't these people get it?

Airport closed.....Now trying to evacuate 100K people....

    Does Pompeii ring any bells...?

I heard a report about this yesterday. All flights in and out cancelled, I assume because of the ash in the air.

Some whiner was complaining about it, and about "geting paid for his trouble" or something. Cheez. I mean, I understand whining about the situation, but even the worst-led, evil, greedy corporation can't control a volcano, and isn't liable for it.

I say "evil, greedy corporation" as an extremely conservative, neo-libertarian (note the use of "worst-led"). Corporations aren't inherently evil. People are, and people run corporations. Etc., etc.

    Ummmmm......burn salve?

To paraphrase Sartre, other people are evil, greedy corporations. (Actually, I don't agree with his "other people are hell", but it's catchy, oui?)

I was doing a walking tour of Boulder yesterday and I came across the Boulder Socialist Revolution. They were proclaiming that capitalism is bad for the environment. I wanted to explain that capitalism isn't bad for the environment - humans are bad for the environment. But Boulder, y'know - progressive.

I'm going with this for starters. Maybe a lesson or two on firewalking.

If it's not a get out of dodge type volcano as is Bali, then marshmallows are a must for a bob.

Volcanoes in the Pacific region can be dangerous. I was once stuck on Guam when flights were cancelled due to an eruption in the Philippines.
I also once took science students on a field trip up a dormant volcano in Papua New Guinea and had a pleasant hike. One year later, the volcano erupted and buried the town of Rabaul in ash. Most of Rabaul had to be relocated. Fortunately, I was not nearby at the time.

Aye, the folks near Mt. St. Hellens could have used a Last Rites Kit.

I was just watching a show about an Indonesian volcano that blew in the mid 13th Century that caused reduced temperatures for 10 years, famine and millions of deaths world wide.

Same thing has happen ed several times in recorded history and even St Hellens, though relatively small, reduced northern hemisphere temps by a few degrees.

You do not have to be in the immediate "get out of Dodge zone" to be seriously affected.

From what I read the volcano in Iceland that caused so much trouble back in 2010 is about to start another rampage and this one is predicted to be bigger than the last. It has been building up since summer.

With regard to the Iceland volcano. Beth Edwards, a geology professor in Pennsylvania says, "Once a volcano starts erupting, we can track it better than when it's not erupting," Edwards says. "You kind of have to wait until nature does what it's going to do."

Mom and dad spent a lot of money for that bit of wisdom there folks so I know we're on the right course.

I was in the UK in 2010 when that Iceland volcano was cancelling flights back to the US.
Was hoping to get a few more days around London because of it, but nooo. Wind changed or something. Was the suckiest ride home as flight was packed due to earlier cancellations.

I've went to a lot of those volcanos. I don't know how many or even where many of them were any more. About all of them were active to one degree or another.
Some had big trees with foxhole sized holes that let off sulfer gas. Some you could drive up to the hole and climb a platform and look down the hole and choke when the gas was going your way. I've been to ones that gave a big light show at night with the flowing lava running all the way down on many sides. One of them you could walk out on the cooled lava and jump over the cracks and you could see the lava below. That's the kind where you find a big crack and get the marshmallows out.
I've been back to some after they had erupted and they had changed. I rented many apartments in a place that a giant volcano that always smoked looking over the big town. They are a big tourist attraction and they are a lot of fun. Not so much when when they erupt. There were sometimes lots of stories and old old ruins.

Okay. First....If I can see lava below...I am NOT jumping over anything. I will be backing up. Second...if the gas is causing me to choke I am not, repeat not, standing around on a platform looking at anything. Third...When we get to the part in the apartment lease about the volcano I will be driving to another town and talking to another realtor. Seriously. Mom just did not raise me that way.

Rick, be sure and look behind you before you back up. Remember all those movies....

Rick, I just listened to the guides and when they said don't go any farther or don't go there I didn't. Some wouldn't hop over the cracks or couldn't climb the mountain or wouldn't even get on the minivan to go to the volcano because it had thirteen people in it before them. I guess some people are just superstitous.

I wasn't an expert so I had to listen to someone who knew more than me. On that volcano there were a couple geologists who were experts in a bunch of stuff. They went down inside the hole with ropes and climbing gear to get pictures and videos. They didn't come out. I sometimes thought I might be able to do something like that myself if I was just smart enough.

I don't think they were paid that much Hunter. They were just some dumb locals who grew up around the volcano is all. They were smart enough to warn that canadian and american geologists what would happen if they tried going down the hole though.

Wolf - It's the music. You just have to listen to the music. When the creepy music starts playing it's time to pull out the carry weapon and never walk backwards! It's like those folks have never seen a scary show before. And if you're on Star Trek don't them hand you a red shirt. Bad juju.

Oooh. I didn't know about the red shirt. Thanks.
