Looking at the coverage on the antlers, my guess would be shedding velvet.

I believe velvet coming off is correct.....velvet in really bloody.
Had to move a dead buck out of a road a few years ago...that was in velvet.
Grabbed the antler, and my hand squished thru the coating to the anter....was really messy and bloody

Now.. looking at the pic...pretty gruesome......and not given a reason or cause...do you think you would get a lot of OMG's from the bunny hugger crowd?

Oh yeah. They'd blame it on a wicked, evil hunter for sure.

I posted a pic of a knife I finished on Facebook. It had an antler handle. One person commented nice knife but I feel bad for the deer. A friend responded - you do realize that deer shed their antlers right? She was relieved. I almost (I didn't, but it was sooooooooo tempting) responded saying - yes they do shed their antlers. This one was taken wit a lung shot with a 30/30. I figured she would have had nightmares if I did.

I think that thing twitched. It's a good idea to poke it with a stick before sitting down like that. You just never know. I had a cousin that knew a guy that had a friend whose neighbor shot one of those with a .22 and just knocked it out. Came to during the picture taking. Was not a pretty picture...if you know what I mean.

I've seen that deer photo on Weatherdotcom in the lower section sensationalist stuff.
Immediately thought it was a deer shedding velvet, but it's really surprising how many people don't know that. There are several of those photos out there.
    This one is pretty cool.
