Default Bug Repellant... What's your best??

Hi Everyone, Just wondering what bug dope you all use, homemade or commercial.

This summer was doing some research into different repellants, but figured it makes sense to ask those who spend lots of quality time in the woods for their advice.

    Thanks!

Deep woods off, and plenty of it. Nothing like a case of organic chiggers to cure that "Mother Earth News" streak in you.

In a pinch though, I will pick a few basil leaves out of the garden and rub it on my arms and neck. I seems to keep the mosquitos at bay until I can get to the DWO.

Deet. OFF makes one called "100". It is 98% Deet. Pricier than most stuff out there, but zero mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers. Love the stuff.

Homemade "Bug Stuff" with lemon eucalyptus essential oil. It works very well. "Repel" is a commercial version.

FWIW, the active ingredient in LEEO (same as in citronella, but LEEO doesn't have the funky smell of citronella) is recognized by the Nanny State Insect Agency (can't remember the official name - the CDC, BFD, FU2, or whatever) as effective.

I use DWO dry on my shoes prior to doing a Bed Bug inspection.

Hey Hunter, are the bugs plaguing you these days?

I was just wondering since it was about 15 degrees when I woke this morning, it never topped 32 all day and is sitting on 19 right now, and you are about 600 miles north of me!

I have not seen a bug in weeks and have not sprayed any deet in longer than that!

If I get malaria I am really going to be p!$$ed!

DEET, like everyone else. I use several formulations. The Ultrathon cream is really good, seems to last quite a while. I always keep a small squirt/spray bottle as well. Lastly I keep some of the DEET wipes on hand since they're great for doping up you face, ears, hands, etc without getting it in your eyes.

    BTW, welcome to WSF!

Agree with the others. I've tried them all. The 98% DEET Deep Woods Off, although more pricey, is well worth it. It does need to be reapplied as needed when you sweat or otherwise get wet.

An additional benefit, it is safe for use on both children and dogs, according to advice I received from both my pediatrician and veterinarian. My poor black lab was once being eaten alive by horse flies and deer flies to the point he was crying and bloodied. I began applying this product and he was bug free for our final four days.

Be careful where you apply DEET that is that potent (I use 100% from time to time). It tends to melt things that you may not want melted.

Deet is good enough but sometimes I don't have it with me. There is plenty of mosquitoes in our area, so I face this problem often. There are some tips on how to fight bloodsuckers without any repellent in this article:
    https://pestcontrolhacks.com/get-rid...nd-sand-flies/
I found information about how to cure mosquito bites there too.
