Thread: What is this sound?

  1. #1

    Default What is this sound?

This probably isn't the right area for this post, but I can't make one in the more relevant area.

Anyhow, I live in northern Illinois and we keep hearing this sound, usually but not exclusively at night... seems to be coming from either the steps in the backyard or the backyard porch.

The noise in question. Sorry it's not great but not sure I want to go outside til I know what it might be.

The average age of members on this forum is pushing 60.

Do you realize how many hearing aid batteries this is going to use up?

BTW, if the sound is occurring during daylight hours why do you not look out the window and see what the source is?

It sounds sorta like a possum growl but not quite.
Or some kind of bug caught between two sheets of paper, or some leaves.
We sometimes get those huge caterpillar-hunting beetles that sound like that when stuck in between the windows.

Just be glad it's not a fox. It would have scared the snit out of you and you probably would have called the cops and told them someone was being murdered under your porch.

You call it a hodad up north, down here we call it a hootnanny.

They usually make more noise than the recording. Lots of thrashing around and screeching.

This is the reason Edison invented the light bulb. He, too, had something making noise outside his back door at night. Flip the back light on or invest in a decent flash light. If its eyes glow green, close the door. If the eyes are over four feet off the ground, close the door. If the eyes are more than two feet apart, close the door. If there is one eye over the other, close the door and move.

I think a fisher cat would have a fox beat for sounds of murder.

I have no idea what a marten sounds like. I did one run in front of my truck one night. I jumped out quick and chased it up a tree. I could see it pretty good in the moonlight in the tree, but had no idea what I was looking at till someone told me what it must have been. As far as I know, we aren't supposed to have them here.

Same if there is only one really big eye and it is 10 feet off the ground?

My first thought was that the critter making the offending noise was operating in both daylight and dark. Why not go out and see WTH it was!

This kind of thing is the only excuse I can think of for having a flash-light on a shotgun.

I had an outlaw in the family at one time. I am sure that some on here are going to identify with this. There was a scurrying noise in the living room one night. He picked up a shot gun, racked a shell into the chamber and walked into the room. He flipped on the light and blew the field mouse and a goodly portion of the lower wall out into the yard. His wife never bothered him about scurrying noises in the house after that. She divorced him claiming he was mentally unbalanced. Hence the 'was in the family' portion. I had always suspected he was a bit out there. He married a close relative of his shortly after that, which sort of confirmed my suspicions.

    You realize you're disparaging someone's daddy/uncle, right?

    I resemble that remark!

And I was forced to look up what disparaging means.

But I must remind the host of members here that my offense was with a .38 shot cartridge and not one of larger bore, and the interruption of my sound sleep was at 2am after an 18 hour workday.

Like a lawyer representing himself, I am not qualified to diagnose my own mental state but can only beg the consideration that the incident was 40 years ago and I have done very little physical damage to anyone since that incident.

No one that did not deserve it anyway.

Blew that mouse to a puff of blue fur!

The two good things I can say in both instances are you both hit your mark.
