I like them. A customer has a small canoe (about 10 ft) that he has put outriggers on. He used aluminum square tubing across the top with about 4 ft pieces of 3" pvc as the outriggers. This setup looks much better. I keep trying to talk him out of the canoe - no luck yet.
amazon has the large crab trap floats. Two floats for $20. With some pvc it shouldn't be too difficult to make.
My current canoe is 14'7" and pretty stable. If I can ever talk that customer out of the small one it might be a project.
I had a 10' canoe for a while. It needed outriggers!
That thing would roll if you swapped your bubble gum from one side of your mouth to the other.
And if you tried to sit in the stern the bow would stick straight up in the air and the thing would toss you out like you were riding a blender.
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?
Well thought out video - nice find.
“There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag … We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language … and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”
Theodore Roosevelt 1907
Mine is 17' and is very stable. Even empty with only me in it, it's stable enough for a smoothish river.
Why do I live in Alaska? Because I can.

Yes, I have wifi in my outhouse!
Mine is 17 foot too. I've had it on class II / III- rivers. However, I can be on a calm lake and when a certain person gets in, it's no longer stable. Now that we're back to the land of gators and moccasin snakes I'd rather not go for a swim. We live at the north side of the okefenokee swamp. Maybe we can rendezvous a group this winter. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steph...ter_State_Park
The group I camp with will most likely do some river trips. I'll make sure you know about them. We have a camp coming up at the end of September at KICCO WMA on the Kissimmee River. There is a good spot to put in canoes and kayaks. Let me know if you are interested in coming.
We (I couldn't make it) did a Suwannee River trip a few years ago. We tried to do another, but the water level was too high. Hopefully we try again.
I doubt I'll b ready by then. All my trash is in storage.
I sure with I had known about outriggers before I lost all my guns and ammo.
Why does everyone have the answer to my problems AFTER the fact?
I don't really like outriggers....they just get in the way.
Made a trolling motor mount with an outrigger....to keep level....
They did not work for my use....on rivers, cattails and shallow water.
My canoe is a alum 17 ft Grumman....very stable IF BIG guys don't sit on the seat and squirm around ....or the 100 pound lab doesn't bail out ...in the dark...while heading out to the blind.
I bought the low profile stern a prow...as the wind plays heck with the cool looking indian canoe ends.
By myself.....IF you bring a cooler (beer) for the front...balances out very well.
BUT
Will dump all your guns and ammo to the bottom or the river.

All this worry about outriggers and turning over...
I solved it all.
Bought a 12' john boat. =Light enough for me to handle it out of the water. Draws about two inches of draft and does not settle into the water until it has nearly a ton on board. You can push it with a trolling motor, move real good with a 5hp and tow a guy on water skis with 10hp. Or if you feel real energetic you can paddle the thing, it is set up for oars and I have used a double ended kayak paddle in it many times.
On top of that you can fill the thing with water and it will not sink! All the boxed in seats are filled with foam. You can even stand up in it and walk from one end to the other, pull the dogs in over the gunwales and even sneeze without turning the thing over.
