    Default Hey Crash, I'm polishing

Hey Crash, what do you use to polish out that Crashcarta?

I am at the polishing stage on a handle made from antler with black horn spacers.

I have buffing wheel and all that, and have done this before, but it was 20 years ago and I have forgotten what color and what brand the polishing compound was.

Sanding is the key IMO. After shaping I use 120, 220 and 400 on the belt sander. Then I hand sand with 220, 400 and sometimes a little finer (usually not). For buffing the handles I only use white buffing compound on the wheel and then finish it off with a very soft, floppy wheel with no compound (mostly to take of any residue. The sanding part is important because if you buff it too early it will be pitted with compound or dirt in the pores.

I have already gotten down to 300 grit paper and I have white compound and two wheels so I hope I am in good shape.

    Thanks.

Back off Rick, You remember what happened the last time you tried to taste the compound while the wheel was spinning!

I found several pictures that would be appropriate right about now, but some people are getting ready for supper.

Yeah, but that was a wire wheel. I've healed too.

It has often been said that a buffer is the most dangerous piece of equipment in any shop. I sort of scoffed at that...........until I built a 2 HP, 3450 RPM machine. Yep, they were right.

My first job in a dental lab was polishing dentures and partials. Dentures were easy, but partials were like trying to polish a crankbait with 3 sets of treble hooks with a 4in. buff wheel going 3250 rpm. You learned to be careful real quick.

I can just envision a Crash Blade knife flying across the shop at 3450 MPH

More like hitting the concrete floor, breaking the tip off. Found the knife. Found the tip a few months later stuck in the roof of the shop.
