    Default First Tomato

My tomatoes have come in late this year. I have been getting little cherry tomatoes for a month while waiting for the big ones to ripen.

I picked the first one today and had it for supper all by itself with just salt and pepper.

Best thing I have had to eat all week!
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?

Our last big tomatoes played out over a month ago. We've got one little cherry plant left that needs to be pulled up but we're waiting for a few green ones to finish. Nothing left now but two Tabasco plants and one Serrano plant. I picked all the ripe Tabascos today and made some pepper sauce. Should be enough to last a year or two (one jar).

And Lettuce, mayo, and bread, and a dash of Crystal Hot Sauce.

#1 wife folds aluminum foil accordion style and spreads it out in a cake pan, then lays the bacon across the folds. She cooks it in the oven and it makes the most perfect bacon for a BLT I've ever had. The perfect amount of crispy but it still has substance.

Now I have to go get bacon, and unfortunately, a store boughtn tomato.

    Congrats....now it starts...

The guys in the shop....(before interwebs...when guy used to actually talk.)...had "the first tomato" contest every year.

Rules.....You could pick any variety of bigger tomato....no cherry or plumb...Start it your self....how ever you wanted...a get a ripe tomato.....In the garden.
Target was July 4th in Zone 5.

Started "Siberian Early" 48 days..."4th of July and several others"...in February in the basement.....germination was in about 2 weeks.
Used grow full spectrum... lights on timers...like 16 hours a day.....heated the post with a water bed heater....planted in garden when soil was like 55 degrees...about mothers day...with green water walls....

Best I was able to do with out just growing inside was about July 10th...and didn't win....LOL
Two week later (like now time) I had so many tomatoes we couldn't keep up.....and some of them were volunteers.

Can't fool mother nature too much.

Kinda gave the race up for heirloom varieties.

When I lived down in TN the standard was fresh tomatoes for 4th of July.

Up here you are lucky to get them in by August 1.

Temps in TN were 10 degrees warmer on average and last frost was mid April. Up here we still get killing frosts as late as Mother's Day so you do not get to plant anything until first of June.

A couple of years back I decided to start some inside in Feb but I do not really have room and I got tired of living in the tomato jungle for 5 months.

Crash is further north, but when we lived in Orlando we did container gardens. Planted tomatoes 1st of March and mid Sept. to Oct. Cherry tomatoes did well either season.

There is an amazing amount of truth to that. I had maters and peppers under grow lights for the church and it was like a jungle.

Saw the topic of this thread and thought it was about Monica Lewinski (or her successors).

Nope, this is a totally nonpolitical thread concerning the tomato I knocked off last night as the partnership of three components in a fantastic BLT sammich.

I have been on a low carb diet for over a month and the bread was on my denied foods list, but the first home grown tomato of the year deserves a proper consumption, so a sammich was in order.

It's gone now. I am sure I will be sick of tomatoes before long.

I never eat baloney. Every. Except.....When I get a fresh tomato. I do have to have a baloney, mayonnaise and tomato sammich. That's right up there, well almost, with BLT. It gets designated a BaLT.
