    Default 1911 shoots left

It isn't just the 1911, my 380 and 22LR seem to favor the left side of the target. What am I doing to cause that. Some days I shoot pretty much on target then other days the left side. Must be trigger finger placement but place it where. I do fairly well with elevation.

    Just curious. Jim

    Which is your dominant eye.......?
Both eyes open?... or just your shooting eye...?.
    Shooting with glasses?
    Right handed or left handed?

You are about the same age as the rest of us and I can testify that it is probably not your fault.

    The target is moving.

There used to be a chart that told you what was making things go wrong based on all the factors a pistol shooter has going on.

Here you go, I found it first google try.

I'd just move the target to the left. Simple.

    Perhaps Jim has no "problem".

    Perhaps the sights need adjustment.

After one has developed a habit for 60+ years it might be easier to move the sights than to learn to shoot all over again!

And not all factory sights come zeroed in out of the box. Me and a Ruger product had a bit of disagreement over shot placement a while back and the final decision was made on one of those handy Harbor Freight sanding belts.

    I won!

Do you have a private area to shoot? If you can, try shooting your sidearms from a bench off of sand bags. This will help you get a rock steady hold on the gun and keep it from moving around. This will allow you to more easily verify that the sights are properly regulated (ie that the POI and POA are close to each other). Assuming that the sights are regulated- and if you do this with all pistols it's probably you, not the gun- then you can diagnose the issue. The link to those charts is handy. "Pushing" in anticipation of recoil will cause your shots to go low for instance. With revolvers I like to leave a couple of cylinders empty, then rotate the cylinder a couple of turns before closing it, trying to ensure I can't tell where the rounds are. Then I can just shoot and see what happens. When you get a click where you expect a BANG! you can see where the muzzle and sights are when the hammer falls.

I can't remember if you've ever mentioned how much experience you have shooting handguns. They're much more difficult to shoot well vs a long gun, and the skill is very perishable. You have to shoot fairly frequently and/or augment your practice with dry fire to maintain a decent level of proficiency. Practice is essential to any endeavor but skills with a rifle are somewhat more durable IMO.

    Yep I noticed that.

    Just change all of them!

Come to think about it, I saw Robert Redford fast draw and shoot an acorn off a tree from the hip once and practically sling that bullet out of the gun and he's a left wing anti-gun Hollywood star, surely a good old boy like Jim could do better than that. Who needs sights?

Actually I shoot better instinctually....most of time.....If I use sights.... mostly just front sights.

I have also realized that I am in the 1% of the internet, that can't shoot my Ruger LCP 380 MOA at 100 yards.
I SEEN the posted targets...I so bummed...

Then again the only long range pistol shooting I do is with a scope.......

Yeah, but if you look closely at those targets from the dead eye shooters you can usually see stippling from the powder. Must be some of that newfangled "special" powder that carries 100 yards from the end of the barrel.

Noticed that....but didn't want to ask.....

I would get any answer like....

What do you mean you don't believe me!!

Do you know how many deer I have killed?

I have been shooting for 10 years!

How dare you question ME....on MY shooting!

I once knew a guy that was in some kind of service ...and watched all the Youtubes!

Ya, sure......WHATEVER......(blowing sunshine up your butt, emoji)

Most any scope would be way too large and heavy for the LCP....and wouldn't fit in my pocket.
That would kinda defeat the purpose of a small, light weight, in your face, get off me tool...
Not a hunting 100 yd shooter

The last hand gun I had scoped up was the S&W 686 .357....and I took that off.
I not a fan of handgun scoped....

I was just relating all the stories or the fantastic shooter that are on the interweb......and that the only possible way I could shoot these groups at 100 yrds...would be with a scope....maybe.

    Sorry for the confusion....

Shoot your pistols using a bench rest or at least resting on a sandbag and find out where they are really shooting. Adjust sights as needed or adjust your aiming technique. You have to know where the gun is really shooting before you can correct the issue!

"Back in the day" I ran a surplus store that also had an FFL. We had a break in one night and when I arrived and did an inventory we called the police.

They could not get into the safe, so most of the firearms were still there but they did take a Raven .25 auto and an Aimpoint.

The cop that took the report was about the same level of wise @$$ as myself and when the report ended I said "You know what to look for don't you?".

His immediate answer was "Yea, a guy with an extremely accurate .25 auto!"

That was 1985. They are still looking for that Raven with the Aimpoint on top.

Been shooting a couple of time since I posted this. Up until 15 months ago all I had to shoot was handguns. Then I got into AR-15s and fell in love with shooting them and the handguns remained silent in the gun cabinet.

I began checking my grip on the 1911, holding on real tight, and squeezing the trigger. That seemed to cure most of my shooting left.
