Default After Winning Alone We Said Goodbye Off Grid Yurt, We Bought a Mansion !

We are saying goodbye to living off grid in the yurt and buying a MANSION. Or at least it feels that way. Thanks to our amazing realtor Dave Cichowski and Cates Realty from Rockland Maine, I can give my wife the gift of running water. I need a secure home for my family so I can feel safe going off on adventures in the future. My right of way goes through my neighbor's property which has turned into a junk yard over the last 7 years, and its not safe or sanitary for my wife and kids to be walking up and down our driveway through all that trash. Additionally in order to buy that land from the neighbors and clean it up, then build our house would take at least a couple years and cost more than buying something that only needs minor work and can provide the security my family desperately needs right now. I went on History's season 3 of Alone with the intention of winning so I could provide for my family, and this seems like the best course of action. It was a really hard decision but if i want to make the most of all that i have accomplished in Patagonia i needed a home for the family asap. We still have the land and its only 8 miles away so i can go out there as often as i want and play, film youtube videos and do firewood. I may even host some bushcrafting classes. And if things go well hows to say what the future holds we may yet buy up the rest of the land , clean up the trash and build our dream retirement home out there anyway.

My grandfather always said if you own a home you are a slave to it all your life. Man, was he ever right. Congrats.

Lol I know how you feel. My biggest surprise moving from a small cabin to a house was "walking". Had to WALK to the other room. It was funny. Congratulations. Have fun!

Thanks guys it was a hard decision for me not so much for Jami but its the right one the family is so happy. The littles love running around in there new yard without tripping on old stumps And my new workshop and studio will make it possible to produce the kind of Youtube content i have been hoping to make . I'm thinking now I will go Back up to the land And make a video series Basically reenacting All that I did On Alone. I will make the rake again, Shelter, Show how I kept my fire going for 50 days without restarting it And all the other stuff That people didn't even know about I will do over again . Of course I don't have the bamboo So I'll have to use resources Available in Maine. Except for maybe the rake all go out and buy some bamboo. I was thinking for the shelter i will use Cattail shoots and reeds to make the double thick walls. Hopefully i can get going on this soon this is a busy month. Getting the website all set up for selling slingshot, speaking at LL.Been this weekend to 4000 boyscouts and more of the same for the next 4 weeks. Should be good though with lots of video opportunities. Like my first, first class flight on an airline. United is so cheap i upgraded my flights on the way back from Texas at the end of the month for 160$ to first class. I wanted to do it at least once.

Another video series idea that I bet would be possible is a series about yurt living. How you found the spot, cleared it, built the yurt, etc. Then where you hauled water from, the tricks you learn about outhouse use, etc.

Tricks for an outhouse? First, I'm pretty sure everyone knows how to go. Second, I'm not sure I actually want to see tricks performed in an outhouse. I'm already having trouble with the mental image in my head. Suffice it to say it has to do with juggling.

Lol must I mention poopcycles? I doubt you guys have those down there but having to knock down a tower of frozen poo before it pokes you in the hiney is not something people think about unless they live it.

Suddenly this bowl of yogurt doesn't appeal to me much this morning.

    LOL...Yeah, I can relate a bit...in a small way.
Pit out houses were not allowed, had to buy a concrete holding tank and have it pumped....Saved my money (same size and money) for a septic tank.
    Soooo
Porta Potty was used in an unheated shed, in camp.. during deer hunting one year....-10
One young feller used a whole roll of TP on a dump (?)...froze.

Added an electric heater on it (another story) to get it cleaned out....
But that was just a mole hill, not a mountain....LOL

Most folks don't know how good they have it......Till you don't.

BTW this experience did give rise to the Humanure sawdust composting toilet.....bucket gets full,... cap it and start another.
    Much, MUCH better.

Before the two story outhouse, I had a plain ol' single story one.
