    Default Fish Scaler

I was looking at some pocket knives the other day and saw the ol' fish scaler on some. Here is a Victorinox example: https://www.swissarmy.com/us/en/Prod...an/p/1.4733.72

Anyways, I have seen these on pocket knives since I was a kid. I have never used one. Has anyone here ever used one? What about a scaler that wasn't on a pocket knife? I have caught and eaten a lot of fish. Mostly trout, but some catfish as well.

Worked OK but was kind like a "survival" scaler...you use it when you have to.

I can see carrying one in a BOB...or having a knife with the (saw)teeth on the spline.

But if you have a lot of fish to clean....I use a pressed tin scaler ...in my tackle box along with a mini Repella flay knife.

Can remember several old timers made and use homemade scalers using bottle caps.

You know I've used quite a few but the one in hunter's second pick seems to always works well and it's cheap. They have these "peeler" skinners that seem to be popular. But I'd have to be cleaning a lot of fish to pop for one. Catfish get cut, nailed down through the head, and pealed with pliers. Remove head.

I always used the back side of whatever butcher knife was around.

Also used a metal spoon many times.
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?

I just use whatever dull knife is available. Usually one of the old serrated paring knives works just fine. Unless it's a Striper. For that I just use the big old bait knife I usually have with me when fishing for those things. Scales are pretty close to 1" around.

I still have that Yellow Imperial! I've always been a spoon fan.

Do you guys scale your fish then? I have never scaled a fish. I either skin it, or cook it with the skin and scales, and then peel off the skin later. What fish are better when they are scaled?
