Any axe lovers here?

I love axes more so than knives. Judging by the topics on this forum, it seems there's not much love for axes here. I'm surprise since axes is such a great tool and so fun to use. And I never go outdoors without my favorite axe (GB SFA). It's my primary cutting tool. Anybody else love axes?

Actually, axes are raved about. The problem is you can't search on a three letter or smaller word so "axe" can't be searched for. But we have had a lot and some great threads on axes.

I've always enjoyed a good axe.

For a long time my favorites were Estwing axes. Right now I have two, one I bought years ago and one I found stuck in a tree at an old campsite.

I tend to shy away from Fiskars, while I like all their other tools I've seen several Fiskars handles break. I've never seen a broken Estwing.

Lately I've been liking the Council Tool axes. I finally purchased the "broad hatchet" and it is a great campsite axe. I've handled a couple other models and it seems like they are better quality than their MSRP might indicate.

I've drooled over the Gransfors and Husquvarna axes for years, but I can't really justify it. Honestly once you pay the $300 for a swede made axe, what do you have? An axe. Will it cut better than a $50 Estwing? Maybe, but not enough for me to notice.

Nice work! One great thing about wooden handles...is the ability to make one yourself.

What kind of wood?

thanks for the comment. Made them out of birch and ash. Prefer hickory but it don't grow in my area.

Count your blessings....the only "hardwood" I have access to is alder and its not very hard. Hemlock might work, its one of the hardest conifers in my area...

nice job randyt, one of these days I'm going to buy an old axe head and restore it (of course my dream is to forge my own axe head) and make a handle for it. Like Alaskabushman, I have only alder here. I am actually trying to carve mine with a knife and it seems very hard to cut it. Maybe I have to get one of those draw knife.

$300? Whoever is charging that price is ripping people off. The going price for Gransfors is around $130. Husquvarna is even cheaper at $80 or so but their quality control isn't as good . I wouldn't buy my Gransfors if it was $300. I got mine for $125 shipped. Avoid Amazon it is a ripoff there. For me, the craftmanship and quality of the Gransfors is worth the extra money. The performance is definitely better than the Estwing. But yea, any axe over $200 isn't worth it. It's meant to be abuse anyways.

I've got a few (OK, maybe more than a few) axes along with several heads that are waiting on restoration and hanging.

When my grandpa died, I took his old axe. Have no idea what the brand is. It is very abused. I plan to cut off the handle, re-shape parts, sharpen, and re-hang. It is a future project, so might be a while before I get to it.

Have a few that I use....mostly TruTemper or Craftsman.......
Several hawks couple made by a friend.
The only cool axe I have is was from MF ......Plumb Autograf double bit axe.

Wow. That's a nice axe. The steel still looks good, just needs some tender loving care and a new handle and it will be a beauty.

Looks like it's already getting some TLC. Wrapped original handle with a fresh grease rag before being put in a vice. I wouldn't change anything on that axe. It's already a beauty.

Noticed that huh?....LOL...rag isn't greasy.....but didn't want jaw marks in the wood....
May brass brush some of the surface rust off......but handle is sound..(I didn't put the nuch in it).

Then "hang it" behind the wood stove at The Place.... as a trophy from MF.
Yeah I know, "hang" means putting on a new handle....
My "hang"....means "wall.

Actually I recieved a PM from a guy, on another forum...that had seen my post of this axe(I guess?)....joined that forum...only reason for joining was to contact me about selling it.

My Estwing's and Collins' do the job. Nothing fancy or expensive.

Axe fan here. I love the feel of a good wood handle, but lately have been going with composite (Fiskars) or Estwing.
