Thread: Hello from Alabama

    Default Hello from Alabama

My name is Maudie and I am a 36 year old stay at home, homeschooling mom to 8 so far, and wife to Cameron. My husband Cameron works for Coca Cola and it's our goal one day to have land and homestead. I garden and I am learning how to can and perserve food. I also want to learn to quilt, sew, crotchet and knit. We currently only have a little less than a acre but we still have plenty of room for a garden. I'd like some fruit trees and a few chickens sooner than later. We've also thought about a couple of goats but I'm not 100% sold on that really right now :-) I look for forward to getting to know everyone and being as active of a member as I can at this season of my life :-)

Welcome from Alaska! Sounds like you are already on the way to having your own little homestead. I feel like too many people are convinced they need 40 acres and a lake in order to homestead. Good job learning the skills and getting things figured out already.

I'd hold off on the goats till you get used to chickens.
There ain't too many problems you can't fix with $500 or a 30-06.

Him-"Whats the best knife for survival?"
Me-"the one that's in your pocket."
Him-"I don't have one in my pocket."
    Me-"Exactly."

8 kids and you think you are going to have time to sew, knit and crochet???

My wife used to have to wait until I got home from work so I could watch the kids while she took a shower, and we only had two !
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?

welcome and goodluck, remember once you get livestock be it rabbits' chickens or goats.
you'll be tied to the homestead unless you can find someone to do chores for you.
the word chores you'l be using that word a lot, heh heh. for any livestock i highly
recomend the storey guides on raising livestock.before you get them.
and remember friut trees take years before you can get your first apple or whatnot just saying.
coyotes listen to them, like children of the night what music they make.
