Small Gill nets... Inquiring minds want to know.
2017 In the latest round of "survival shows" I noticed ultra light gill nets...and I have seen some 50x4 stream nets... Compressed into a ball it can fill out a need for a quick meal in a bug out bag no matter of the legality of the future. I may practice with it - but I still like fishing legally. I am looking for lightweight easy to use solutions for my kit.

I've used them in the past during the herring run. They work great, they really pack in the fish. Only downside is they can get pretty tangled. I imagine you could fish-out a stream pretty quickly with one of these.

Yes I noticed some "over throwing" and ending up in a tree on the other bank, some folks got wet. It has a high value in survival situations, enough for some to retrieve in very cold water.

they can be used to catch birds and small animals as well
so the definition of a criminal is someone who breaks the law and you want me to believe that somehow more laws make less criminals?

Gill nets and casting nets are not the same thing.
Gill nets are largely static, you set them and let them soak. Fish swim into them, panic and try to swim forward through the holes that are just a bit too small. The net goes around the gills and the fish is trapped.
Cast nets are circular with weights around the edge, and you must actively cast then retrieve the net. Cast nets take much more skill.
Gill nets are like the snare of the fish world.

Cast nets are common down here in FL. Gill nets got banned when they almost wiped out the redfish population. They would sting them across a coastal creek at high tide and come collect at low. Very effective.

Gill nets are very regulated here as well, since several fisheries we nearly wiped out in the 60's and 70's. Its a harsh way to fish with no way of targeting one species and no good way of releasing non-targeted fish, since damage to the gills is nearly always fatal.
In a survival situation, all good things really...
