Question How to dry the soaking boots - opinions on this one, please..

    Hi U all,

I am Niels from Denmark - I'm a brand new member of this forum. To say hello I give you this little story....

Some years back I was with the guys on one of our countless fishing trips in the Swedish wilderness. I had gotten both my boots soaking wet and was drying them by the fire.

From the woods came two noisy guys in high spirits. They told me that they knew a better way to dry the boots. Without waiting for my approval they took the boots, climbed as high up in a tree as they could get and hung the boots from the most unreachable branch they could get to.

As they came down they explained to us, that because it was more windy up there the boots would dry much faster. And so they disappeared into the woods again.

Now, to this day I haven’t really figured out if they were right in their theory or if they were just making a practical joke. It certainly took me some time and energy to retrieve my boots from the tree.
    There you have it folks.

Whats your opinion on the matter.

I can't say if they attempted to prank you. I will say that wind will dry things better than heat and without damage. At the top of a tree it is a heck of a lot more windier than below. Much the same as if you are in a cove on a lake or on shore and you move into open water. Wind does dry everything efficiently.

My opinion on this is that there would have been two noisy guys in high spirits leaving my camp barefoot and my feet would have been toasty warm.

    Hey, thanks,

No - I never tried again - and at the time I didn't really believe it would work so I didn't leave the boots hanging that long.

    thanks for reply

There are two ways to get rid of moisture (water). Heat and airflow. Heat works by speeding up the evaporation rate. Think cold water vs boiling water. Boiling is so fast you can see the steam. Air flow works by moving air over water. How effective this is depends on how dry the air is. Air at 90% humidity is going to take a while whereas 10% will dry in hours.

It is best to have a combination of heat and air. Looking at how a dryer works will explain it well. However, the guys were screwing with you more than anything. I agree with Crash. They wouldn't be coming out of the tree without my boots unless they were dead.

    Hi Niels Welcome!
    I think you where pranked.
Fire works well for drying my boots, besides I dont want to walk around and climb trees with out them seems like a recipe for disaster.
