They are cutting tobacco in my neighborhood this week. Wagon load after wagon load heading to the barns ad the fields left as raggedy as one can imagine. There are enough leaves left hanging on the stalks to keep half the smokers in the nation happy for a long time.

I am pretty sure a couple of leaves off most of these big Burley stalks would make a whole carton of smokes.
Was turkey hunting several (many?) years ago....my walk took passed a tobacco barn........kinda walked thru it both doors were open....stopped a picked up a couple of good sized pieces of leaves....
Later broke it up, was very dry...and tried smoking it in a pipe.....and I was a smoker at the time......HOLY CRAP...was that strong.

    Tossed it.

    I don't drink coffee.
    I don't smoke.
    I don't chew.
I don't drink alcohol...well, a glass of wine with the wife occasionally.

    No. I'm not Mormon.

I do enjoy a cup of tea in the mornings, but I'm pretty well stocked on that. We also have some good substitutes in my area, so I'm good.
There ain't too many problems you can't fix with $500 or a 30-06.

Him-"Whats the best knife for survival?"
Me-"the one that's in your pocket."
Him-"I don't have one in my pocket."
    Me-"Exactly."

    I bet it was......

Just goes to show that the least amount of things you are not addictive to...the better off you are....of course not near as satisfying.

OK now if we trim our calorie intake, suppress all our cravings, abandon technology, live a green planet lifestyle and reduce our carbon footprint....

How do we know when a survival situation has arrived?

That is easy. The two things that are better than gold if you are in a screwed up place are cigarettes and hard liquor. I don't smoke or drink but if I see a crunch coming, I will stock up. The end of WW2 had a good chunk of Germany using American cigarettes as barter and booze is always a sure bet. And earplugs as I don't like the sound of gunshots and screaming very much.

You may be correct, but I'm not old enough to know what happened after WWII.

Booze may be your best bet as a trading item as it has many uses.... and the shelf life is much longer than cigarettes, that would have to be consumed rather quickly.
I can attest that a year old, sealed pack of smokes, left in a hunting coat for a year, was pretty raspy.....

Yeah I started that a couple of years ago, with about 6 varieties from Ebay, I planted Virginia Gold and Havana Gold (thinking about rolling cigars), they were both easy to grow, now how do I get rid of them, the volunteers come up all over the place, they just need water, they grow about 7 feet high. Don't believe it when you hear that the tomato worm is the only thing that attacks them, grasshoppers will go through them pretty quick. I also have 15 coffee plants growing inside, probably just enough beans to say I grew coffee.
