    Default Pressure Flaker Project

    A friend of mine has been doing a fair bit of knapping again lately and expressed interest in a nice pressure flaker. As some of you will know I am - for various lax definitions of the word - a machinist in my spare time. I figured why not put my lathe to work on something actually useful outside my own shop. After I got started I decided to make up a few more. The set screw ferrule is 304 stainless from some scrap bolts I had a bunch of, cross drilled and tapped 10-32. The wood is african mahogany and the copper insert at least on the first one is a piece of buss bar cut out and cold hammer forged somewhat into the round to firstly get it round and secondly to work harden it a bit.

    Yeah, though not enough lately. the last time I picked up some stone I slipped with the flaker and ran my knuckle down the whole edge of the biface I was working on pretty hard. It's just about healed up now.

    Hahaha. I'm pretty sure that was my mother's nickname for me when I was an infant. I'm glad to say I made it well into adulthood without it becoming stumpy.

    Nice job Canid!

    Mine is a re-purposed escrima stick with a hammered copper wire glued in. I think it is long because Ishi preferred a longer pressure flaker.
