Yeah....for sure....not pretty.
Part of the problem with frostbite.... even just a slight case in the past, you will suffer effects the rest of your life....like whatever that got it....gets cold easily, peeling, redness, and pain.....

Sound wisdom, I froze my right ear while hunting snowshoe rabbit ( hare ) as a kid,back in Quebec. 60 years later my ear Still peels.

That's some serious frostbite. Sure hate to see that happen to somebody. But it sounds like he was pretty lucky to be found and alive.
