Default taking bear with a spear

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4_PoTehPTQ

same page, taking elephants with spears, many hunters in on it, tho.

to me, this would have been an unacceptably high risk of losing a cripple. maybe he had a guy there with a 308 auto, to finish off the bear if the spear had not achieved a solid strike?

Given the same circumstances, a good man could have attained multiple good hits with a pocket 9mm. That would have produced more relevant info and a great hunting experience.

Pretty stupid all around. A good man would have used a sufficient caliber to dispatch the animal humanely on the first shot.

That seems kind of cruel...I mean, that goofy bugger has a rifle right there next to him, plus ample time for a good clean shot.

I would use a .22 with silenced luminous sights. Thought about using .223, but I used the mag spring to make fishing hooks.

And the ejection port cover to make a knife!

BTW most states will not allow spears to be used on big game. It is not a popular or well receiver pastime.

What the hay? Getting a bear from a perch with a spear, and the poor thing runs around for a while with a spear in him, and now you gotta chase after him and finish him off somehow, but instead you just sit in the perch for a while grinning and saying 'yay', and the other guy saying 'atta boy'.

    Uh-huh. Atta boy.

I suppose hunting with spear could be as legitimate as bow and gun, etc...but shouldn't any method/skill worth bragging about include an actual kill...a relatively quick one, that is, instead of 20 minutes later when you finally decide that you're in the mood to finishing the job? This, however, is little more than slapping an animal for some kind of 'counting coup', except that you're sticking something into him so he has to suffer a bit until you're in the mood to finish it. It doesn't take much skill to hit a still animal with a rock or spear or whatever else from up in a tree.

Do we ever see how long the bear had to put up with that? How he was finally dispatched?

And, um...getting a bear with a pocket 9 mm? Huh?

Quite a few years ago I saw video of hunting bear with a spear and thought it was a stupid idea then, not to mention cruel to the bear. Spearing a animal in most instances does not seem like a humane method of killing the animal. It ranks right up there with people who bay a hog with dogs and then stab it to death with a knife.

I did remind me of an older movie for back in the '80's.
    "Windwalker"......With Trevor Howard.

Grandfather dies(?) and is laid out for his sky burial.....with his gear.
Platform falls over dumping Grandfather down into the snow, where he is chased into a cave but a huge bear.....you see him facing the bear with a broken spear.

Next scene he walks into the Tipi wearing that hide of the bear.....the family is sitting around the fire....and they just kinda scooch over, making room next to the fire....
Young boy says, "Grandfather, where did you get that big bear hide?"
Grandfather says, "From a big bear.......a long life is hard on an old man....."

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windwalker_(film)

The whole spear, bear, 9mm is complete BS.....not a related bit of personal wisdom.....or to paraphrase the writer "FOS"....his words.

Spears and knives ain't hardly my style. I suppose I'll just "stay modern" and use my .280 Remington with 160 grains Nosler Partition bullets. I know they work very quickly on Black bears.

This is why hunters have a bad reputation. Look at how many views that video has.

For the thousands of us who train with sufficient weapons to take disciplined, humane shots, one goofball makes a video of himself stabbing a bear to death for the lulz.

That's not a hunter. That's a torturer. I'll bet that meat was really good with the amount of adrenaline it had in it.

I would have loved it if the bear climbed the tree, and ripped that guys leg off!

I dunno about hunting anything that big, but I have always wanted to pig hunt Arkansas razorbacks with a spear. They actually have a season, or did. Kill a pig with a sharp stick. Yeah, that'd be fun.
