    Default Old Hickory Mod

The other week I was asking about a belt sander for woking on knives. Well I got the HF 1x30 combo with the disc sander and an angle grinder and went to work. This is what I have done so far. Please excuse the quality. Every picture and this post is by phone.

This is what I started with.

    A comparison.

I'm surprised at how well it cuts and had fun doing it. Already got another pattern drawn on a cleaver for work.

Nice job. Just remember to keep your work cool (dipping in water) while you work. If you change the color when you are cutting or grinding you are changing the temper.

Yes sir. Got a bucket with a couple of drops of soap to keep the blade cool.

I look for them at every fleamarket I go to, have bought them for as little as 50 cents to 5 bucks. They are hard to beat !

If that blade gets too hot to touch it needs to hit the water bucket!

All I can say is, have fun.

I still enjoy reshaping a butcher knife every now and then. I have an Opinel paring knife, with a broken tip, I have been eyeballing for several months that would make a dandy neck knife. I also have a 6" Case butcher knife I put some curly maple slabs on even though I did not touch the blade shape.

Now you need some scraps of leather and a few rivets from the hardware store for a sheath.
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?

I picked up a book a while back, $50 knife shop by Wayne Goddard?? Don't quote me on the author and I'm too tired to dig out the book to check right now. Anyway, really interesting book for you all knife makers.

Did something very similar a little while ago it's ecko forge knife. It had/has some deep pits but I think it just adds character
