What is it?
I was walking along a little creek and saw this at the end of a branch (not sure of the tree...cypress? If it ain't pine I'm lost). It looks like a little brown brain (or dooky ball...lol)

It's a gall on a cedar tree. When it gets wet it oozes a thick mucus that contains the spores. When the mucus dries the spores are released to the wind.
Those look so cool when they "ooze mucus." Like a bunch of boneless jelly fingers.

That's pretty cool. I've never to my knowledge seen a Gymnosporangium before. The life cycle of this species is interesting.

I'm not certain about cedar galls, but some hardwoods -- such as Hickory -- produce galls, which are sometimes used to make inks.
