Thread: Hand drill fire success

    Default Hand drill fire success

After about a week and a half of failures, I finally made my first fire using the hand drill method!

This is truly one of the most awesome things I have ever done! I want to share it with you all because I have received a whole lot of motivation through reading the many threads in this forum. Finally, a forum that encourages its members...thanks to all!

I didn't take pictures but I will say that I used horse weed on a peice of cedar board (fencing type). I also made the board thinner and think that played a part.

I have to go now and dance around my raging fire (of twigs).

Congrats, Grass Hopper....you have done well.....
Made my first one about 5 years ago, actually a couple at the time...with a Mullen stalk and cedar board...haven't even tried since....
    Quit while I was ahead.

That is truly a big deal....Enjoy.

I've never attempted the hand drill.
    Congratulations on your success!

Congratulations....keep practicing and practice finding the right materials as you are camping/hiking/hunts in the woods. Lots of neat options.

Congrats goose, Done a fire bow myself and someday I'd defiantly like to take a crack at a hand drill.

The more you carry in your head the less you have to carry on your back after all.

Thanks everyone, I got another pretty quickly last night, again with horseweed and cedar. I then tried on some other stuff i found (not sure what they were) and only got dust piles and smoke. Gonna try sycamore tonight.

Nice job! Take pride in the calluses you will develop. As a member of the friction fire guild it will be a the next fire that works your edge and keeps you sharp.

fire thong is much easier, and once You've made a pump drill, things get much easier, IF you have a container in which to keep dry your charred punk wood, fungus, etc.

that's tom's fire thong vid. he was one of those chosen for naked and afraid. He didn;'t perform up to snuff, not at all
