    Hey guys,
I'm Melinda from somewhere in Oklahoma! I'm a youngster at 61. At least my mind and spirit is. We live in the country and I have lots of interest. My kids are all grown now but early on we home educated them all. So I guess you can say I'm retired except I don't believe there is such a thing. We have horses, chickens, cats, dogs, birds etc. Yes, I love animals. I garden, can what I grow. I love to learn about how to live off the land in case someday soon we need to. I'm an artist and musician and in general a learner. What led me to this site was a question on google about how long you can store Cisco shortening for. Anyone know? I am happy to find you guys cuz now I know where to go for survival questions Awesome!

Welcome to WS from your neighbor to the south. Storing fats/oils is challenging because they go rancid fairly easily I believe.
So instead of Crisco (not that West Texas Town: Cisco) perhaps you could raise pigs for lard or goats or cows for butter LOL.

    2 years max?

    Welcome home.

Their site has some great advice...." If you notice any change in color or appearance, or if your Crisco product develops an off odor or taste, it's probably past its shelf life and shouldn't be used."

Yeah, that should be pretty intuitive.

    Cool Howdy from Sarge!

Welcome aboard. I have family in Oklahoma as well. Anyway I moved your thread to the "introduction" forum. Don't know about Crisco as I buy lard from a local locker....

Welcome to our Forum, Miz Melinda. Glad you have found us and it. In my experience and opinion a lot depends on how you store it and where you store it. How do you feel about using stuff past their "best used before this date"? I have Crisco that I have kept in the cellar that looked good, felt fine and tasted fine, 5 years past the "best use by" date. Left it in it's factory packaging and just had it setting on the shelf with some other canned goods. By the way I am from and currently live in Oklahoma also. I hope you enjoy the information here. Lots of good and interesting stuff!

Welcome from Alaska, though I used to live in Duncan, OK and still have family in Wyandotte. My parents just moved from Vinita.
Why do I live in Alaska? Because I can.
