    Default New guy

Hello. I'm Larry. I'm from west central Louisiana. I'm 48 years old. My occupation is a veterinarian. I've been one for over 20 years. I've hunted, trapped and fished my entire life. I also enjoy gardening when the weather cooperates. I also raise chickens and pigs. I hope to add goats and maybe a steer to butcher soon. I've been interested in becoming more prepared over the last several years. I joined this site because there are strings on bushcrafting and edible and medicinal plants. I am confident that with the right tools I could survive for a while should a disaster occur. I lived through hurricane Rita and learned several things. If you don't have your own stored food you will be hungry. If you don't have your own supply of water you will be thirsty. Our society will collapse after just a few days without electricity. When you run out of gas to make supply runs you better have a good backup plan...generators are nice, but they run on fuel that becomes hard to get when the electricity doesn't work. If you want to thrive once the lights go out, you have to learn now how to cope with no stores, no lights, no running water, no gas, no modern transportation, and no help from the government. Family and friends with the same mindset are the only people who will be there to help. Hopefully I will meet a few new friends with that mindset here.

Welcome aboard Larry! Nice intro, I commend you on that! I like what you say about Hurricane Rita. Extreme weather is more of a concern to me than a hostile government take over. Another alternative to generators is solar energy. You also need a way to store it. Something to think about....

Welcome home. I've been without power for up to 10 days and everything returned to normal. Well, as normal as it ever was.

Welcome to WS. My experience with life after major power failure in the area is that my wife and kids complain a lot about minor inconveniences for a few days or hours then the drive away to the home of a relative or friend and I am left in peace and quiet. Life returns to basically what I knew during the best summer vacations of my childhood. Now why in the heck did I ever get a ball and chain and little balls attached to that one... ha ha ha

Welcome to our Forum, Doc. Thanks for the great introduction! Can I come live with you? It sounds like you have a great start on being pretty self sufficient! I hope you have, and will take the time to read the threads here. Lots of great stuff! I agree 100% with your assessment about how quickly things can go "bad" without the support of the "infrastructure" that we are used to. Please keep us posted on how you are doing!
