    Default first "modern" leather project

I set out to learn leather working, really because of a need for holsters. figured to learn on knife sheaths to start.

thank you all for the advise from the other thread.

here is a sheath made with artificial sinew, a chunk of leather that was laying around, and a couple copper rivets. wondering if I should wax it up in some bees wax.

the challenge and difficulty for me was drilling the holes for the thread, had a tough time getting the holes straight to the other side.

my leather tools, some old, some new, never really used by me before. I added a stitching wheel and a groover.

    Hey...Looks good to me...

Did you mark out the thread hole first?...And to help out keeping straight.....drill press.

First one I made was for the top of a worn out boot....the boot pull was the belt loop, ....Re-purposed....LOL

    PS found a Pic....first knife and sheath....LOL

thanks for the comments. I grooved it on both sides with the groover then used the stitch wheel in the groove. Used a cordless drill for drilling the thread holes. I made it under my new porch lol.

Looks great! The trick for having the holes on the back side of a pouch sheath can be frustrating. Keeping the lay of the sheath the same throughout the process is important. Using a hand held drill, keeping the same drilling angle throughout is probably about the same. I have also found that the thinner bits tend to want to "bend" if too much pressure is applied, so chucking them up as short as you can helps some.

Nice! The only leatherwork I've done myself is a Swiss Army Knife belt pouch. Not very impressive. I'd like to get better, though.

Well, Zack, thanks....But this is a example of a first try....Got to start some where.

Sheath leather was just a boot top cut out, and laced together with an old lace.

Has had quite a few carried miles and cleaned deer, but is just butt ugly......

Randy, was gonna ask, did you glue it first, before drilling or punching holes?

Have also tied a stitch or two on each end to hold every thing together when drilling....especially with 3 lavers like adding a welt or fringe piece.

The edges were glued together, I can imagine the PIA if it wasn't lol. I have made a few sheaths similar to the one you showed, I call that type " semi-modern". Looks great
