Call the Alaskan Dept. of Fish and Game, they can answer all your questions and keep you within the law

Yea... what they said. Move up here, wait a year, while you are waiting, learn the laws as there are many and make connections. Fish and Game don't play around up here. They are everywhere. That said, finding a place to trap that is not already being trapped is a problem. Accessibility is another problem. Are you going to run your trap line on foot, snow machine, dog sled, what? Not to be a Debby Downer. If you are serious about trapping in Alaska, none of these obstacles are insurmountable.

Don't some trappers hire helpers, Star? If so, that might be a good place to start as well.

Yes, that's why I suggest to come up and start networking. Meet the people. Get to know where THEIR trap lines are so that you don't step on toes. There are major trap lines that are passed down with in families. There are registered and unregistered lines. You don't want to trap on someone else's line as there are consequences to that. You can join our Fairbanks Trapper Association, Google it. They give classes and are really helpful.

Here is all you need to know about trapping and necessary equipment, and what it takes to prepare the skins, etc. This is not in Alaska, but in Canada's Northwest Territories. This young man, Andrew, has many videos, and if you start bringing them up, you'll see what it takes to "trap" and survive, in the great north far country. Andrew grew up trapping, fishing, and hunting

It ain't easy, and it ain't romantic. It's extremely hard, and, at times, dangerous work.

    Enjoy.

Aside from my post # 9 in which I listed a link to a professional trapper, "Andrew," in Canada's Northwest Territories, here is another link wherein you can watch four professional trappers who live out in the remote boonies of Alaska. Watch these people and make note also of all the equipment, tools, traps, machines, etc., etc. that Alaska's professional trappers need, just to stay alive and make a sparse living.

Start with Episode one and then watch the following episodes.

Trappers down here in SE Alaska usually work from a boat and run trap lines up the millions of little creeks.

When you trap with a boat, you can live in town and remain close to your lines.
I had a compass, but without a map, it's just a cool toy to show you where oceans and ice are.
