    Default Search and Rescue

It's official! Just swore in with Search and Rescue. Super happy, I've tried to get on for over 3 years now and it finally happened. Dive rescue/recovery, man tracking, special forces, air squadron, soon rope rescue team. I've been craving this for years. And it looks like I'll be starting fire medic shifts on an ALS engine in a few weeks. Woohoo!

How is it lashed up with government agencies? A lot of resources out there from all levels.

Congrats! I'm a certified man tracker myself. Lots of good training opportunities out there with S&R.

Thanks. It sure sounds like it. If they have a patrol car that's a hot pink mustang the training budget must be alright haha... Sounds like they needed young people pretty bad, especially divers. Hoping I can push for a technical rope rescue team. Sounds like there are one or two others besides myself with some high angle training.

I'll take whatever training I can get but I don't know how well man tracking will stick with me. I am horrible with simple animal tracks. Can never remember what's what.

Well, remembering what a man track looks like should be easy. Just take a step and look down.

Ah, you'll do great, don't worry. 99% of the time they never use man trackers anyway. It's more simple to use a grid search in most areas. The squad here is hurting for young guys too. Their main thing is vehicle extrication though. I had an application in for a while but when I went to the meetings, they never had enough people show up to vote me in, lol. I mainly stick with the EMA guys now at work and respond as a volunteer if we have something big enough.

Oh awesome, I'm so happy for you! Good luck and have fun. I know, it's not fun per say, but satisfying.

Congratulations. As I am sure you know it can be an extremely rewarding job, then sometimes it really sucks. I guess I live for the good runs and the easy reports! Glad you are hitting you goals. Plus we need young motivated folks to replace old guys who end up in other jobs on the chart that are just not the same as being "boots on the ground" THANK YOU!

I can remember my old Chief telling me one time when I was starting to feel 'old', that we need to keep the old farts around to ride herd on the young kids.

Congrats on the deal, it can be really rewarding at time. It can also be a challenging job, like fighting two barge fires on the Ohio River.

Every time an older person dies, its like burning a full set of encyclopedias that will never be published again. So, if you ever want to learn more of anything, just find a old tradesman and hang out with him and then when he passes on, not the full set will burn, you'll have parts of it to pass on to others.
