    Default door hindges

i was looking around menards for some flat brasro use as material for
finger guards for some of the knives i'm making. I could'nt find anything
till i spottedsome door hindges and then remembering that old door hindges
were made of solid brass. so to day i'm going to the antique store to buy some.
gosh how i wish i could study under some of you knife masters here. you could be my sensei.
i'm going to look for the largest ones i can find more to work with, heh heh.

I always buy my brass at a local hobby shop. They have brass stock in various sizes and shapes.

Most of the new ones are steel plated with a very thin layer of brass.

Best place for getting brass is a local recycling center. My local center not only buys scrap metal, they also sell it.

Lots of old pipe fittings and all kinds of decorative objects were once made from brass and I stay well supplied.

Hayshaker, you ought to look into pouring pewter as guards and hilts. That works great as a step from a simple no frills knife to something with accents before you go to the big A brass guard and hilt decorations. You can buy lead free solder at Home Depot or Lowes.

    Great comment...
    FYI

Poured a prommel with pewter (was a groomsman pewter drinking cup, they got divorced) on a rebuild, used a index card as a "dam", melts pretty low temp.

I scored a piece of bronze pipe and had it cut up. Looks just like brass once it's shined.

If pouring pewter use a "dam" like Hunter stated.

Make it a little oversize and file and polish it to shape.

Use a little flux on the metal portions and the pewter will not work lose with use.

I have seen some very intricate pewter casts on both knives and ML rifles.

Once you get the system figured out it will become a favorate
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?
