    Default Rainy overnight with scouts

I took the scouts on a training backpacking trip. This is to prepare them for the weeklong in July. We will have a 2 nighter in June as well. The weather called for rain the whole time. It ain't trainin unless it's rainin. When we started, no rain but overcast skies. We walked a little under 2 miles to the spot. It started sprinkling, so we quickly got the tents up and gear inside. The rain did come. They had no luck with the fire....but I didn't help them at all. They also didn't want to sit in front of the fire while it rained. After the tents were set up, we had a quick dinner of ramen noodles. Then they all went to hang out in the tents the rest of the night. The next morning it was oatmeal.... a quick lesson in how to poo in the woods, tents taken down, and back to the cars. I brought my 8 year old son and we shared my newly constructed tarp and net tent. I also tested out the ILBE with gear for the two of us.

Here is my son next to the DIY tent

    The ILBE fully loaded.

The ILBE performed admirably, having enough room for 2 sleeping bags, 2 sets of clothes, 2 sets of food, a tent..etc

If I look carefully, I can see at least 10. Some are right on the ridge line.

finallyME, I feel it is outstanding the time you are putting in teaching these young men.

But, couldn't you have made a straight lean too set up with a trap like your son used and allowed everyone to sit under it and with your help have had a fire.

I remember when my Dad was a Weblos leader and we went to bed early because of a down pour. Sitting in a 2 man canvas pup tent with my brother for hours before you could even conceive of going to sleep just sucks.

Either way, you are doing an outstanding job!

I would have had to bring another tarp. There is no way I was going to get my brand new tarp anywhere near a fire. Something to think about for next time, I guess.

Good job. Teach them to keep a deck of cards in their backpack.
Why do I live in Alaska? Because I can.

God bless you for taking the time to teach skills and make lifetime memories to the boys. They will never forget the adventures.

Great job. And teaching skills liking how to poo in the woods is something a lot of scout leaders wouldn't touch (no pun intended this time) or even think about. Yet, it's pretty important for protecting the environment and getting the job done. Sitting inside a tent in the pouring rain is just a reality of camping. Now is a good time to reinforce with them that not every outing is going to be sunshine and blue skies and it's often helpful to have something to occupy your mind if you can't get out. Cards, paperbacks, working on knots, etc. are all good pass times when Mother Nature sheds a few tears. Gave you some rep for that.
