As I understand it, one of the more common uses of "numpty" can be illustrated with an example:

Two people spend a lot of time reading about backpacking online. They both have little to no outdoor experience, and both decide it's time to go into the woods.

They both end up taking a similar list of gear, food, etc. They both meet experienced others on the trail.

The first asks advice, makes notes, and plans for improvement on his trip. He's a beginner, and though clunky and over-packed, he learns from the experience.

The other one argues with the experienced people, telling them why what he read is better than their advice. He's over-packed, and can't understand why his back hurts but by gum he's got everything the internet said he should have so he knows he's better than those people who told him about their experience. He's a numpty.

Okay, it's like this. In 2007 when I 1st joined there was a member here from Australia I believe who used the term "Numpty" towards anybody he didn't like. When I asked him what it meant he said that it was "UK for idiot." So we used that term towards those who thought they knew everything but really didn't know squat! To answer your question "are their any good trolls?" The answer is yes. A good troll is a banned troll. The idea of a good troll staying on here while doing his/her trolling thing is an oxymoron. There is no such animal. Now, one can be both a numpty and a troll, but that's not good, okay?...

Kind of a broad definition, may fit a few of our members here.........! Means more than just stupid! So when we get silly we are all numpties..............LOL
