so the definition of a criminal is someone who breaks the law and you want me to believe that somehow more laws make less criminals?
It is probably the one he inherited from Sherlock Holmes or Doctor Watson.

Depends on what I am doing. Car always has a 12ga and a 9mm. I always carry a .380. On trips the 12 ga will usually stay home. If I am going to the woods, a .357 tags along.
But that was before that darn canoe accident.......

If i'm away for the weekend i'll pack my 1911. I recently had to change vehicles and have not really stashed anything in this one except a little naa mini 22 revolver.
I asked my son to go thru my truck and bring the guns and ammo in the house, he asked what was in there. I said I had no clue as far as ammo but the guns were a glock 26 and a 12ga Mossberg. He came in the house with those 2, the naa, a 30-30 a marlin 22 and a snubnose 38.
I really gotta quit doing that. lol
can't go wrong with a 1911 or at least a browning hi power

Unfortunately the only ones allowed to have CC handguns in Canada are criminals and cops... I do keep a little take down .22mag in the camper though and considering it's attached to my truck it's usually floating around.
Road trip guns do not have to be pistols.
In fact, what I consider road trip guns are the long guns I tote in addition to the normal CCW which I always carry.
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?
True that....I'm a shotgun guy, with a verity of ammo....anything else is just a nice addition.
Given my druthers...The "Four" is still high on my list....(someone should have a cool name for these...if you could only have.
Shotgun
Long shooter
.22/ 22 mag
PP hand gun.
If I were to carry that many...that is....if I had that many...well you know.

Maybe my thinking is wrong but it seems to me that most encounters, at home or on the road, would be at very close range. Worse if you are in your vehicle since the weapon has to be small and easy to access. I don't want to be toting a long gun, even cased, into a motel room when it won't do any better than a .9mm or .45 that is easily concealed. And I'm not one of those guys that will be trading shots at a distance unless I'm Gene Autry riding across the flat land with a bunch of desperadoes on my tail.
Going back to Kyratshooter's OP. I add a long gun for road trips not so much for a "What if" involving the vehicle but a "what if" based on being "on the road"/"gone from the house" for an unexpected length of time. Like I might use it to hunt with or if, necessary, to defend myself with. My EDC is usually a Kimber Pro Carry with two extra 8 rd mags in my left hip pocket. That is almost a 24/7 kind'a deal, except where it is impossible(Federal buildings, public/commercial airplanes, that kind'a deal) I have carried "just in case" ammo in all my vehicles for years and with the addition of an 870 I have the ability and option of hunting birds, small game, large game, large dangerous game. That is why I tell myself I am packing the 870. If, in truth, I end up using it for self defense I hope it will not appear to be a premeditated act based on my carrying it to begin with. I still have every intent of doing whatever I need to to keep my family and myself safe, regardless of what, if any, consequence that my actions may have. I fully intend to run first if at all possible.
I agree DS. That is why I keep a 12ga my car. I work downtown, and if any riots or civil unrest were to come about I want to have more than a pistol. I want something sufficient to get my rear end back home.

But do you not worry about leaving it in your vehicle?

In my state it's a felony to carry a loaded long gun in ones vehicle. Wether concealed or not and it doesn't matter if you have a ccdw permit. A fish and game regulation.
