I am a little Rick! What everyone doesn't know, is that I have been on disability since my neck fusion surgery, since I had no skills other than physical labor, that my surgeon would agree to release me to work. He kept that up long enough that I was terminated from the job I had, because he knew they would not comply with restrictions ( they didn't before the surgery either). And I have had an issue with not working and earning my money. So I went to Voc Rehab and we figured out a job that I could do that fit within the requirements that disability used when they approved me. And seriously I was about to give up when I went to visit my sister at work between dr appointments one day ( she is a medical technologist, a step up from my degree) and so much of it is automated now and there is no heavy lifting and I can sit or stand as needed, it was exactly the criteria I needed, so I ask my doctor, who agreed, and I talked to the VOC REHAB counselor, who spoke with disability who did a survey of the position and approved it.
Now once I land a position, I have 7 months to determine if I can do this without causing any undo pain. Clinicals was a very good test and using otc pain patches, aleve and 2 Rx meds (no pain Rx) plus a TENS unit, I was able to do clinicals, and it got easier as time went by to where I was not using the TENS at clinicals as much then maybe once a week needing to use it ( depending on the bench I was working).
So here I am!!!!!! I had to work at it too, because I never even took chemistry in high school, but I passed every chemistry class with flying colors. Blood banking is what scares me though, I have a high respect for the techs who do that, that is the one part of the lab that a mistake literally can kill a patient. Their motto is "Welcome to blood bank, where we don't fix our mistakes, we bury them..." YIKES!

Congrats! I was a late bloomer too, finally getting to Uni at 35. I hope you get a position soon, you deserve some good luck.

Congrads Nell, I'm tickled for you. Didn't know the whole story. Glad you made it. How did you like the hospital where you were? I've been there several times and really like the staff there.

Every time an older person dies, its like burning a full set of encyclopedias that will never be published again. So, if you ever want to learn more of anything, just find a old tradesman and hang out with him and then when he passes on, not the full set will burn, you'll have parts of it to pass on to others.
Thank you Winnie! I am putting in Resumes everywhere within a 50 mile radius so something should come up soon. I would like to work at the hospital I did clinicals in or at the VA, but just to get my foot in the door and get experience I will accept any position that comes along. Probably will be an offshift or PRN ( as needed) position to begin with.
