Bug out bike. Gear?

Here in northern Ohio a bike would be useless in the winter when the snow is on the ground and all over the roads.

I just picked up a used hardrock specialized last week,havent really had a chance to take it out yet hopefully this weekend tho,my only problem with using it as a bo bike is the gears i seem to have a problem with mountain bikes and cables breaking stretching,or coming loose,and i hate trying to fix them.when i was in my 20s a small lake just outside of city was well stocked with pike but the best shorefishing spots where quite aways away from parking lot,we used to bike the shoreline to the best spots.we used to pack those bikes pretty full,coolers,backpacks fishing gear etc. was a lot of fun sadly they stopped stocking lake,water levels have dropped making it little more than a slough now, i am excited about getting back on the bike
