Okra probably will not grow in Alaska due to the temps. I have a hard tine getting it to grow here in North KY. Okra wants hot sun and hot soil. It does not do very well north of NC/Tennessee/Arkansas.

Once you hit the Midwest area you get the "Rick reaction", just like you do with grits. Mostly because they do not know how to cook it or properly blend it with other foods.

It is my favorite vegetable and I grow a couple of rows in the garden each year and keep it on order in the local supermarket through the winter. I think I am the only customer that buys it since when I first asked about it they did not know what it was and each time I shop they inform me that my okra is here.
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?

    Hunter,
I promise that you just have not had okra cooked right if you really think you do not like it. It is really, really a good thing I promise.

Send them both up Hunter! Because yea, if you know how to cook it, it's not slimy at all.

Hot pickled, fried and in gumbo. And you must have never had bacon, jalapeno, cheese grits with a sunny side egg or two set in the middle. You put a plate of that on your head and your tongue will slap your brains out trying to get at it!

Okra, I like it any way I can get it, especially boiled. Yes, it is slimey, but I love it!
When all else fails, read the directions, and beware the Chihuahuacabra!

One important point about exotic foods is that anything expensive and store bought becomes a status item. As a Peace Corps volunteer, I learned to love "koko Samoa" (Samoan cocoa) made from the whole cocoa bean roasted in the village and served with the chewy pieces of cocoa in the cup - delicious. Of course, when visiting other families where I was considered an honored guest, I would be served watery instant coffee made from powder purchased at the village store - the commercial imported item had much more prestige. I also would be given tinned imported fish instead of freshly caught reef fish because the item from a tin was expensive.
