Thread: Hello from the suburbs of chicago.

Default Hello from the suburbs of chicago.

I think I might have found the best forum ever?

Greetings to everyone. I come in search of knowledge.

    A little background..
My name is Michael, I'm 23 years old and I have the mindset of someone who doesn't really feel like they are really "free."

I'm currently a student in college with one more class left next semester until he gets his associates degree in electro-mechanical technology.

I've been looking through some of the posts here and I must say I'm actually incredibly jealous of some of the lifestyle I see represented here. Recently over the last few months I've felt inspired when doing research on people that live nomadic lifestyles. I have taken a heavy interest in the man known as richard "yogi" bair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NIJBXCq0Ss

Well, not him exactly.. just how he goes about fighting the good fight.

I figured this forum would be the perfect place for some education. If I don't end up choosing one of my other plans, I would like to see what it's like to live his lifestyle.^^ However, I need to plan.

Which also leads me to ask if anyone here has ever hiked or done any backpacking in the sierra mountains?

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to gathering any knowledge here that I can get. I look forward to reading more posts.

Welcome from Alaska. It's very refreshing to have a young man come here and not spout off how he is going to run off to the wilderness with no plan, no gear, no money, no knowledge, etc. Running off to the wilderness IS possible at least occasionally/temporarily/realistically. But yep, you gotta have a plan man. And the more education you have about it, the better.

There are many really interesting people here that love to share their knowledge for those who ask (and are not smart *** know it alls). So I think you'll fit right in.
Why do I live in Alaska? Because I can.

    Welcome to the forum.

And a tip from an old timer.

Take that last class and finish the degree. Get yourself a GOOD job. Work for one year and earn what they refer to in real life as a VACATION!

Go to the Sierras and hike until your legs fall off, eat Mountain House meals and power bars until you are sick of them, look at the views and wade in the streams.

Then get on the plane and go back to the real world and dream about doing it again next year. And know that the taxes you pay are keeping up that land reserved for the enjoyment of the people. (even old Yogi in you film works 9 months a year)

And be aware that IL and IN have some very nice preserves within a couple hours driving time from Chicago. They may not have giant redwoods, but they are nice.
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?
