Any one think we should post a disclaimer that the OP's question has kinda gone off the rails some what?

You know, just in case some one takes some of these posts literally?

    Sea Monkeys : Quote

The animals sold as Sea-Monkeys are an artificial breed known as Artemia NYOS (New York Ocean Science), formed by hybridising different species of Artemia.[2] They undergo cryptobiosis or anhydrobiosis, a condition of apparent lifelessness which allows them to survive the desiccation of the temporary pools in which they live.[ < quote

Wait a minute. You of all people would know about SEA Monkeys. You and MadMax. Is this a Navy test? Will Crashdive find Sea Monkeys in the galley? Will MadMax find Sea Monkeys in his bunk? And who gave him the name MadMax and why? Does it have anything to do with Sea Monkeys? Tune in next week for the answer to these and other intriguing questions in another exciting adventure of.......Life Straw!

And with a life expectancy of 100,000 gallons and the ability to backflush you'd be hard pressed to find one better. I've always carried an MSR Sweetwater that has an absolute pore size of 0.2 microns so it's not as good as the Sawyer and my filter only had a life expectancy of 750 liters!
Sawyer make a filter which filters out viruses. It filters down to 0.02.

Well, I don't know about Oz, but here in Europe things like the Lifestraw can be pretty hard to find, almost impossible on the high street, even in camping stores and when you do find them, well, they're not cheap. It was cheaper including postage for me to import one from USA.

Most places you can find are $20 USD, I'm not sure what the conversion would be to your currency. It's a great thing to have in any survival kit.

Ain't nobody got time for that.

Seriously that takes time. And obviously fire. Used the sawyer many places with no problem. I can't be bothering to stop and build a fire to boil a little water 10 times a day. But this isn't the Malaysian forest.

A lot of people don't even filter high Sierra water. Not worth the risk to me but I feel plenty safe with just a sawyer.

I have a couple of the Aquamira Frontier water filters that fit in your pocket. They are for the cryptocrawlies and giardia things. No flavor enhancement like with the charcoal type filters.
Never had to use them before the new Sawyer portable stuff came around but they are still stashed around in various kits and whathaveyou.
