I was looking at those Friday. I may have to invest in one. Good post!

Here's the company that makes them.

Rebel - I ordered one of those but I also found a pre-filter bag I though you might be interested it. I just thought it might extend the life of the sock and ceramic filter. It's 7X16 inches, has a metal ring around the top and a handle that will let you hang it above the first stage bucket.

Default pre filter ideas, long term water storage

Interesting filter for emergency water, cabin in the wilderness or 3rd world. Depending on the turbidity (silt in water source) a pre-filter is a good idea regardless of your filter. I occasionally take some Alum (aluminum sulfate at spice section of supermarket) and a large bag or folding bucket for this especially for rivers out west when it has been raining a lot and they look like café au lait. Here is a YT instructional video of one method of using it.

Also those connections like the valve/faucet at the bottom of the bucket and connection between the two buckets tend to leak over time so the best long term water storage is a large barrel with only small openings on the top and a tube to siphon out the top with into a smaller bucket. I.e. for a survival cabin or at home if water utilities are compromised. Some handy siphon devices are available (prepper supplies) that make this very easy. Dark colored/painted barrel or buckets discourage algae, I.e. block out as much sunlight as possible.

My pre-filter bags arrived today and they are really heavy duty. Good quality.

Are the Pre-filter bags fabric or a "filter like material" of paper or spun fiber ?

Are they reusable or one time use?

Would another fabric work just as well ?
If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?

They are polypropylene felt and can be used more than once. They trap particulates down to 1 micron so you can use them more than once until the pores are blocked. The cleaner the water the longer they will last. Any fabric or material would work to keep sediments and debris out of your first stage bucket (dirty water bucket). I got these because they can work down to 1 micron. the advert says it's 80% efficient at 1 micron so that would have to be a nominal 1 micron filter. That makes sense since it's a felt material.
