    Default Caribou

So weekend before last I finely got the time to go hunt for a caribou. It was a beautiful day. I was a couple miles outside Cantwell when I spoted three caribou about half a mile off the highway. It was a crystal clear day. The temperature was -25f with a 15-20 mph wind out of the north. I snowshoed to within 200 yards and shot the biggest one which turned out to be a mature bull. My rifle was a Ruger M-77 in 7.62x39. I was shooting Corbon 150gr soft points.

Gotta luv that. Nice. What kind of gloves are you wearing? I can keep everything warm in winter but my hands. About the only thing that comes close is military trigger finger mitts.

The gloves in the pic are fleece lined rubber gloves that I put on for field dressing. The gloves I wore for the stalk were fleece and thinsolate lined leather gloves.

    It's not a scout rifle. It's an M77-II.

Where I hunt them they range between 300 - 500 lbs. the one in the pic was about 350lbs I'm guessing. I didn't weigh it.

As somebody always wants to know. The knives I used are both custom made. The smaller one with the black handle is my own design and made with Elmax steel. The larger is by Three Dog Knife and is made in N690. The larger knife is only sold by Northern Knives in Anchorage. It is available in several different steels.

If you still had your Crashblade you would only need one.......but noooooooooo - you had to leave it at the bottom of the river.

It was in the ocean and if I still had it then I'd still be in the ocean with it. That Crashblade was an awesome knife. It was one of your first wasn't it?

It was one of my very early ones. I like to think they've improved some since then.
