Default Design, build and give away.. part two

OK I'm back on track for the design, build give away project. I took the input, not all of it of course, melted some Bowie input along with the Matt Graham idea and a little Oklahoma Pig Sticker... and come up with a few variations of a knife. Its open for discussion and modification. I'm thinking 1/4" thick 0-1 or something similar, anyway 1/4" thick heavy duty chopper/what ever, 3/16" minimum.

I have three initial drawings for you guys to mull over and look at and who knows where it can go from here.

one with a stronger Bowie side

two with a stronger Matt Graham and Steven Potts side.

3rd option with a little armature hour Microsoft Paint work.

I like all of them but the 2nd drawing stands out for me.
At a 1/4" thick it should be able to lop thru a good sized branch.

I like option #2, it looks great and 1/4 inch it's a heavy duty knife.

They all look good. #1 gets my vote, but whichever you choose will be fantastic.

@ 1/4" I might take the flat grind higher that is something that happens for me while grinding, I take the bevel to where I think it looks right. Some times I take the bevel to where it ends up going due to screwing up....lol.

How do you guys feel about 0-1 tool steel for this one? I'm limited to size on what I can do in my electric oven, 13.5" will be the absolute max I can do in it so maybe D2 or A2 would be an option. 1095 doesn't do to good at 1/4" I'm not a huge fan of 5160 . I can make up to a 25" or even longer in my forge though.

Here are some large knives I made from 1/4" 0-1

if I remember right this one is 13 or 14" range. When I made the first one of these I got caught up in a trap of making these to the point I had to refuse so I could do something else.

I like them all but the second one calls to me stronger. I still like the idea of brass being used.

The first one might look really good with two handle choices or something really dark.

They all look good to me. If I had to put them in order of preference, I would say 2,1, 3.

Your offer is so generous I'd be privileged with any of them. That first one though is a work of art.

I like the double finger guard on 1 but also like the raised thumb bit on 2.......undecided. I reckon 2 would be good for carving tasks....may be the double guard would get in the way. I don't particular care for the top guard on 1
Love the look of how its coming on
Oi loike making fings I does

This dude is massive thick, I wish I would of just got 3/16" steel or surfaced ground this one down a tad, but it is what it is now. I'm trying to decide to do a tapper tang or not there is plenty of weight on the blade to keep it plenty weight foreword but with 3/8" scales and 1/4" tang I think I will remove so much scale material it will end up just being little slivers...lol. I'm not sure how much or if any I will be able to work on it today but if you guys want to vote or give your two cents on tapered tang or straight tang with a little file work and depending on how my schedule works out, I have a sheath to make for a knife that needs to go out and I have to help my Son with some work around the vents in his roof. I picked up a large slab of 3/8" black linen micarta which I think will be tough, look good against the brass guard with 1/16 brass pins and tube then throw a single Mosaic in just for giggles. Should be bullet proof and look good.

    She is looking great!!

If you wanted to remove more weight, you could cut a blood groove in the blade. But I'm not too sure how that would look.

Ok drilled a few holes one for a front lanyard option the other two just to look cool. Put a little simple file work in tang. Then mixed up some high temp cement and coated the upper part of the blade this will cause a differential heat treatment and a Hamon if I would etch the blade to bring it out.
