    Default Brown was here.......(truck)

Brown truck stopped today, and brought me another piece of the quest.....30-36 Handi Barrel.

Latest addition to the .30 cal project.
    Started as a Ruger .204 ( for the SB2 receiver)....now includes.
    .204 Ruger......and 30-06, 30-30, .35 Remington .35 Whelan, and .357. barrels.

....and this one snapped right in and locked up tight.

Still hunting an .308, as well as the elusive 7.62 X 39......

The whole line being discontinued, and the barrel program being shut down.....gonna make it harder.

    The quest continues.

if worse comes to worse get a common barrel and cut it off so it's a foot long, bore it out concentric. Then turn a barrel blank down to fit the old barrel stub. Solder it in place, maybe even accu-glass would work, it works for liners. Chamber and head space and fit up the ejector.
so the definition of a criminal is someone who breaks the law and you want me to believe that somehow more laws make less criminals?

Well It is.'t like all the gun and barrels have disappeared ....It is more like those that have them want bigger bucks for them.
Now that means some will sell barrels that they paid $55 buck (rifle) for in 2006...as the average price is in the $200 buck range.

    I got this one for a little less....but watching another .460 S&W .454 casull, .45 lc at $256 bucks........

This is a modified barrel from a .45 lc barrel that has been reamed out.......
.45 lc barrels haven't been offered for a while from the factory.

This will go high......Oh well, everyone need a hobby.

I wanted Handis in .500 S&W, .444 Marlin, .204 Ruger, .270 Win, and just about everything else over time. I'm REALLY hoping they replace the BAP with a similar program with higher tolerances, so the action doesn't have to be sent in to have the barrel fitted to it. Not going to hold my breath on the matter, but honestly I wouldn't mind paying a little more for higher tolerances so long as I didn't have to send the action in every time I wanted a new barrel...

Hunter, I didn't know they made the Handi barrel in .454?

    It's a reamed .45 lc.....and that hasn't been made for a while.

If you stop in over at Grey Beards Outdoors....in the H&R section....them boys have made just about any caliber you ever heard of....the weirder, the better.

Gotcha. Yeah, I would love to have one in .454. Would actually prefer that over the .444 Marlin.

For the Handi? To shoot all those calibers? Get it from someone on GBO?

That's better than the Raging Judge! Would you be able to put .410 in it as well?

No, Like I said it's a reamed out .45 lc barrel...and came off or ebay.
I do have the .410/.45 lc barrel for the Handi as well....That was on the first go around, with the .243 Handi base rifle.

That Handi came as a .243....
    added
    .270, .45/70, .410/.45lc, 28 ga, 20 ga. 20 ga rifled bull barrel, 16 ga, 12ga w/screw in chokes, and the .50 cal ML.
Added a .22 lc versa pak...(off set bore for center fire receiver) as well.

No sure which receiver I'll have this new one fitted to....Yet?

You sure the reamed out .45LC barrel can handle the chamber pressures of .460 or .454? I'd almost be leery of firing either of those, as they're pretty high-powered rounds.

    .45LC Max pressure: 14,000 PSI (97 MPa)
    .454 Max pressure: 60,000 PSI (410 MPa)
    .460 Max pressure: 65,000 PSI (~450MPa)

All figures pulled from various internet searches. Just be careful, friend!

Guess I gotta tie it to a tire to try it out.....My primary will be the .45 lc.

Loading on a .45 lc can run really hot.....so not real worried.

I do like the idea of being able to fire those 3 calibers through one barrel. I'm all about items that can be as variably usable as possible. And those three would be choice, for sure. There's a video on Youtube where a user shot .410, .45 Colt, .444 Marlin, and .454 Casull through a break action, single shot .410. The user is "iraqveteran8888", the video is called "The Ultimate .410 Shotgun". It's part of their "Lost Arts" series, part 6. They did a couple more videos prior to it with that same .410, part 4 and Part 5, where they shoot some other interesting ammo through it. Thing held up like a beast, but eventually had catastrophic failure of the chamber (which I believe already had a small crack in it) when shooting a .454, I believe.

    FYI.......Quote>
    Influence on other cartridges[edit]

The .45 Colt became the basis for the much more powerful .454 Casull cartridge, with the .454 Casull having a slightly longer and stronger case. Any .454 Casull revolver will chamber and fire .45 Colt, but not the inverse due to the Casull's longer case. The .460 S&W Magnum is a longer version of the .454 Casull and the .45 Colt. Likewise, .460 Magnum revolvers can chamber and fire the two lesser cartridges, but again, not the reverse.[9]

Now figure that most all Handi rifles in the larger calibers all have the same breach diameter and length..... and barrel profiles...(not including profiled and fluted barrels).....such as the 45/70 and .444 Marlin.....
I reasonably sure this has be done before.

Another common conversion is the .357 reamed to .357 max

Yeah, I see what you're saying there about breach diameter and length, I was just concerned about the difference in chamber pressures between the rounds. But thinking on it now, if the barrel has been reamed to .460 along the whole length, then you're not going to get the pressure build up that you would have if you attempted to fire .460 down a barrel reamed to .45 (which, the .45LC bullet diameter is actually .451", originally .454"). So yeah, it should be all safe. And if you're mainly going to fire hot .45 LC's you should be good to go.

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to test fire a few warm .460's or .454's with the gun strapped down before firing those hot .45's though...

Mostly was looking for the .45 lc barrel to go along with the other .45's in the collection...if I had one.
Was a factory offering for while, but had been discontinued a few years ago.....

Ammo is gonna be expensive for the .460, and .454 anyway.....so may give it a try....but not gonna be shooting those load a lot.
Just good to know that you can.
