Yeah, I think the aerial flare is your best bet, esp if theres air recon looking for you... Even if not, a red flare is "supposed" to mean SOS... *IF* the one that sees it, knows that or not is off the table.

I'll probably put one of the kits on February's shopping list since they're relatively cheap.
That orion set from WM looks good but I have never used one of those to signal or start an emergency fire.
If there is a boating supply store near you (independent or West Marine etc) the people there may have recommendations as well (may be able to special order). Here is one of many online sources but the hazmat shipping is a issue. Landfall Navigation
