First Aid Kit Essentials

Hey guys,

Since i'm new, I figured I would just jump right in and start posting about something i'm familiar with. I would only want to give advice in something i'm experienced in as opposed to posting about stuff I have no clue about. Like survival. There's a ton of good info on survival so I feel like I need to give something back. I recently became a lifeguard so I feel i'm qualified to talk about this. Anyway, here's my personal recommendation on what one should pack in a first aid kit.

First Aid Kits

Your First Aid Kit should be:

• Easily Accessible
• Well Organized
• Waterproof
• Clearly Labeled "First Aid"
• In a Bright Colored Container

Contents of your First Aid Kit

Basic:

1. Scissors
2. Tweezers
3. Surgical Gloves
4. Cotton-tip applicators
5. Antiseptic Towellettes
6. Steristrips
7. Sterile Telfa Pads (Individually wrapped 25 x 10 cm)
8. Sterile Gauze Pads (Individually wrapped 10 x 10 cm)
9. Bandage Strips or Assorted Adhesive Dressings
10. Absorbent Pads
11. Adhesive Tape (2 cm and 5 cm) (Get Both)
12. At Least 3 Cloth Triangular Bandages
13. At Least 2 Crepe Bandages

Advanced:

1. Jelonet
   
2. Metal Splints (4)
   
3. Spinal Board
   
4. More Cloth Triangular Bandages
   
5. Ice Pack or Instant Cold Pack
   
6. Sandbags / Head Rolls
   
7. Aspirin

Extras:

1. Razor Blades
2. Thermometer
   
3. More Tape
   
4. More Jelonet
   
5. More Cloth Triangular Bandages
   
6. More Aspirin
   
7. Blood Pressure Cuff and Stethoscope
   
8. Large Syringe
   
9. Pressure Dressing

Luxuries:

very good write up (I wont use the Acronym of your name) BadgerOutdoor, and thanks for the clear info.

We have 100mph tape & super glue in ours as well.

A sucking chest wound on the move old habit, and may not be recommended by professional tx, yet both are handy in other ways such as failing adhesive on something, or to secure a splint etc.

Thanks for the write up. You might also want to use the search feature to see what others have in their kits. Lot's have been posted. To me, the first thing folks need in their first aid kit is knowledge of first aid. And what you have in your kit will be determined by what you plan to use the kit for. I have several. One is for camping and hiking, one is for my grandkids sports activities (that includes the first kit) and one is for major trauma.

I would also suggest ice packs in the basic kit since bumps, bruises and sprains are just about as common as minor cuts, maybe moreso. You might also want to consider a hemostatic agent like QuikClot or Celox.

A good headlamp, LED, is NOT a luxury...it is a necessity. People get hurt in the dark, yes?

Also a good magnifying lens will go a long ways to help with splinters.

Thanks for posting. But first aid kit for what? That's highly debatable one what's a "necessity" or "luxury".

As Rick said, knowledge is the first thing you should have, which goes nicely with Hunters signature. "The more you know the less you have to carry"

There's a good amount of items that can't be reproduced or fashioned easily on there. A lot of those can. Either way I don't know about you, i'm not carrying a C spine board in my pack, or even in my car.

Is this a first aid kit for your vehicle? Something you carry hiking? Home? My first aid kit for what?
