Think of BLM land as like a National Forest, but with no park rangers to maintain it. The rules for using it are a bit more lax, primarily because there's nobody around to enforce them.

    Question Home-free!

There's been reports of large "tent-cities" popping up because of the financial problems here in our country. Rents, utilities, gas, and food; all the nesseseties of life that people can't handle so they are surviving the best they can. Maybe we need to factor this in to our thinking as well!

How exactly does one find land under the BLM? I dont really see much in my area in virginia.
What exactly kind of land would I be looking for, for something like this, I see the options like rangeland, geothermal, etc. but what would be the appropriate name land that could be used for this purpose.

By going here. There's sort of an interactive map-viewer-thingy that you can use to find BLM land. Note: nearly all of the substantial land areas the BLM administers are located in the western US. Out east, it's mostly little plots and parcels.

    Ding!
Wilderness area, sorta invite yourself, you gotta lay low, and not bring any attention to yourself.
If BLM finds you they will attack with their shock swat troops complete with kevlar helmets, and black BDUs, but if there is a lot of you it scares the begeezus out of them, and they bring the media with them after they demonize you in the media.
Word to the wise, if you are going to be a woods tramp, learn to be invisable.

are you saying that you can just go to certain coordinates listed on that map and set up camp, make an open fire, etc and this is "allowed"?

    Default "allowed"

anything's allowed until you get caught.
