Back when catalytic converters were first installed on cars off road vehicles were exempt from the requirement due to the heat of the converters starting fires in the bush.

When you are in a dry wheat field with a pole truck generally the first alarm is seeds popping because they are up against the truck muffler. The second is usually smoke followed by, "Oh, (add favorite expletive)!" Been there a couple of times.
