Default Is it okay to drink??

    Hello all,

I wanted to post an interesting question and see what everyone had to say regarding it.

I was teaching a class regarding water procurement, purification and filtration and someone in the class asked if it was safe to drink their own urine. They said they saw a certain british survival show star do it on his show and wondered if that should be done. My answer was no, as your urine does contain salt and other trace minerals in which your body would then have to waste fluid in flushing this from your system (a second time) thereby dehydrating you even more so. But I wanted to see what everyoen else thought. I was trained a certain way, maybe my training is out dated???

    Thanks,
    Brandon

There are a lot of variables from a safety standpoint. If you are hydrated so the urine is almost clear it is probably safe since the water/toxin ratio is low. The darker it gets the higher the ratio the more dangerous. Your body has worked hard to concentrate and eject toxins in the first place so personally I wouldn't do it in any event. I would use a solar still, condenser or other means to separate the water from the toxins. I'd manage it the same as i would salt water conversion to drinking water

It's sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life.

    No, and here's why.

If you are in a situation where you are becoming severely dehydrated all of those toxins in your urine become super concentrated. Ingesting them will actually speed up the dehydration process and could well cause other complications.

Drinking urine when you are fully hydrated will have minimal ill affect since all of the "bad stuff" in the urine are rather diluted.

I wouldn't suggest it to any of the people I teach. I too have been asked this question. Was told the Grylls does it. I just said I didn't view him as a survivalist if want to take all my information from. I suggested that if that ever came to that situation that a solar still will remove the toxins from urine. Yes the quantity will be less but much safer. But I told the student that it would never come to that. I teach basic survival in a Mississippi setting. Water is everywhere. And if I ever got dehydrated to the point of resulting to urine I'm already dead.

Its coming out of your body for a reason - to get rid of it, so why put it back in. Would you re-injest vomit because you were hungry ?

Even the one who started the curiosity for many people, bear grylls, said only do it in an absolute emergency but avoid if all possible.

Once you start pondering to drinking your urine, it would have already became too concentrated.

There is also new evidence suggesting urine is NOT sterile. I posted a thread on that some time back with a video explaining why.

The REAL survival pros will say NO... The TV know-nothing class will do it for the ratings, thus passing on bad information.

Urine, under no circumstances, is safe to drink.

The body discharges its waste in urine... It is not logical to believe in any universe, it would be "safe".

I wonder in what circumstance you are picturing where it would be something you are contemplating.

The idea is to be prepared enough, both items and training, not to get to that point.

NO..never. I teach in my classes never to do so. If you must, use a solar still and you may pee around it. This will help obtain only water and remove all unwanted items from the water. Strictly no,

It's not safe to drink one's urine. Urine is excreted for the reason that it isn't useful and healthy to the human body. I've read a few articles with regards to these as well in cases where people are trapped somewhere and for survival reasons, decided to drink their own urine.
