    Default Any switchel drinkers?

I made up some switchel tonight. It's been awhile and I made it a bit strong, to much molasses. Any switchel drinkers on board?

I learn something every night, if I live to be a hundred, I'll be a smart feller.

My recipe is 1 gallon water, 2 teaspoons powdered ginger, 1 half cup apple cider vinegar, 1 third cup molasses. The amounts can be tweaked depending on strength of flavour desired.

Everything is easy to buy, but curious if local supermarkets have powdered ginger, or where do you fine yours?

I've at least heard of it, it's a very old drink. I love ginger beer and often brew my own. I've never had switchel though, I'll have to try this as it sounds like a quick and easy version of ginger beer with a twist!

start with small amounts of molasses and vinegar, it can get strong fast.

I didn't care for the molasses as a sweetener, coupled with the ginger it was too "cookieish", like a ginger snap. Then I tried the maple syrup variation and really enjoyed it! Very crisp and refreshing! I would have drank more but the kids guzzled it down...

Tried it before and didn't care for it. I really don't like apple cider vinegar.

I made some years ago from a recipe in a readers digest book on back to basics.

The recipe said it was an old thirst quencher from the days of hot farm and field work.

I was in Whole Foods and saw a jar of this stuff. It was pretty steep at $7 for a pint, but I gave it a shot. It's one made with maple syrup.

Now I'm looking up recipes to make it in bulk. It's one of those foods that doesn't sound good but really works. Thanks for posting this up.
