Default Edible and Medicinal plants in Southern California

I have always had an interest in my local plants and have found it hard to find guides or resources on my area. if anyone has suggestions on basic edible or medicinal plants in my area, I'm looking for a good place to start. I live in Southern California, in Ventura County. I'm about twenty minutes inland from the beach and an hour north of LA. Thanks for the help!

Hunter63, saying Hey and Welcome.......From Wisconsin.
    A quick Google turns up:

Unless some one lives in your area, gonna be hard to tell what you have growing there.

BTW there is an introduction section:

Great link! Thanks, I now have a place to begin. Also have already found three of these plants locally, so it's spot on.
