    Default Pike River Rendezvous 2014

It's that time of year again and I have been sorting and packing gear for the Pick River Rendezvous.

Kinda serving a dual purpose as the "camp" is what I use at the Jamboree as some of you will recall.

In past years we would go to these re-enactment events 6-8 times a year...including a "Frozen butt camp and shoot" in January.

Been backed off to 1 or 2 events....but the Pike River Rendezvous is a Demo Style with everyone doing different things for fire making to dug out canoes to making linen for flax and wool....

I have a group form the Kenosha Country Archeological Society....and we put on a display of artifacts...and actually play the game of "Chunky"with the spectators.

I'll need to take a picture of the game.

Chunky stone in the bottom center.

I'll add more as we go along as we are setting up Wednesday, from last year

As I have been trying to off load some gear, I wish y'all were closer so you could see what is going.......
    Will let you know.

Great event, I miss every one. I get to see some of them at Fort Fredrick, MD. Send greetings.

Yeah, Karl I will.....had a good talk with your friends last year.

This will be the first event...with all the work of packing, set up, since the surgery....so we will see how it goes.

Gonna be put some more gear up for sale,....needs to be used , and means I don't have to put it all back.

We collected all this stuff over 30 plus years, and realize that as we slow down some has to go....yet it's really hard to part with the treasures......LOL

Haven't made up my mind yet, but some of the pack baskets may be on the block....

Parked "Big Red" the time machine.....so we are back from the 1830........with a side trip to 1740's.......Still need to unload.

Got a few pic's to process and post, made some new friends, got promoted to corporal in our Rodgers Rangers company....got sun burn and very tired.........Great Time.

This was my first outing since the surgery, and I do have a way to go....but mostly got along pretty well....and had plenty of helping hands......All good things.
Puts me one step farther toward the Jamboree......trailer will still stay packed.

Wait a minute....you had to serve 45 years to make corporal? Sad....very sad.

Glad things went well for you. Healthy is a good thing. Stay that way. That's an order.

One young lady and her husband, and I put it that way as she is and has been buckskining all her life, put up a wigwam.

Was just across from my lodge so watched the whole thing......
Started out with very thin a wispy willow tied overlapped and tied at the top,

Continued the frame work....did mention that they were drying out as the willow was cut in April......traditionally this frame would have been cut upon arrival at a location when the people made the migrations for hunting to winter grounds and so forth.

They added a liner as step that may have not been traditional....and are working with the tent maker as far a proto types

Then added several canvas sections, which may have been hides, or bark in the past

Thanks, Hunter. That's a pretty cool set up they have. Do you know roughly how long it took to set up the framework and canvas? Looks like a tiny mountain man in that first pic.

It needs to be touched up......But a close up of the skull.....
There was a group there that were painting symbols on horses as was done on the plains.....she ask about "Igor"
    Little back ground....
    http://www.animationsource.org/spiri...tml&id_film=16

The front of the face was painted white.......and a red hand print....you can kinda still see it, as well as some small painted hoof prints, (needs to be repainted)

Meaning:.....white back ground= good life, .......hoof prints=long journey....red hand=been to battle, counted coup and returned home safely.

I was given this skull back in the 1980's as a lodge warming gift...was in my garage, was broken into and stolen.

Bought an ad in the local paper, with a picture, and offered a reward $100 bucks for "Igor's safe return.

Some kids brought him back.....so in celebration I did the decorations......

The whole thing took about 2 hours, but they weren't working too hard.......and the little guy was running around with a tomahawk at one point...didn't post a pic....as I didn't need child services showing up...sheesh.

Poles are set in the ground....but used a 18 volt cordless drill and a 2" auger bit.....I think 14.4 was more traditional.

Glad you had dry canvas at the end. I always had a good time visiting that event.

Thanks, Hunter. I didn't expect they were in a hurry. I was just wondering how long something like that would take to set up.
